I am, unsucessfully, trying to remove the hood from my 52 JD A to replace the muffler and clean the air stack. I have removed all of the obvious bolts, but the fuel tank wants to come off with the hood. The parts manual pictures are not very helpful in this area. How do I take off the hood without removing the fuel tank?

remove the tank with hood. drain the tank if you can, take the air stack off before removing the hood. the air stack sells for around $80 aftermarket probably more from a dealer.trust the people who are saying leave the tank with the hood it makes it alot easier. those little clips are hard enough to get back into place when the hood is off of the tractor.

You can take the tank loose from the hood before removal from the tractor. There are four bolts/clips that hold the tank to the hood. If you can get them out, the two can be separated. I have only been able to do it successfully once when I didn't know any better. Now, I don't even attempt it. There are two brackets the gas tank is mounted to on top of the engine. they are ususally a little easier to get loose. When putting it back together, put the gasoline tank in the hood first. You will not be happy with your new paint job if you don't.

Howard:

The fuel tank is mounted in the hood, and is meant to be removed as a unit. It takes quite a grunt to get it up and over the air intake and muffler.

it will be a lot easer to leave the tank connected to the hood it is tricky to get the clips back on that hold the tank to the hood i used a step ladder and one of my kids on the drivers platform to get the hood and tank off and back on.

Yep! The front of the hood supports the front of the gas tank. My stack was bent so the hood wouldn't slip over it. The hammer bent it some more and I bought a new replacement air stack from the JD dealer.
