I read your lye gravy posts after having a set of new tires installed on some Model M rims. How hot does the solution get? Before mounting the tires, I had cleaned and repainted the inside portion of the rims, but didn't have time to do the outside area, because I travel a lot in my work and the tires were special order which had to be installed upon arrival. I thought that if I let the air out of the tires, and was careful about how I applied the solution to the rim, or at least diluted the solution, I might be able to expedite the paint removal process using your gravy. If however I run the risk of damaging a new tire/tube, I'll strip it the old fashioned way, or remove the new tires and proceed with your method. I want to error on the side of safety, with little or no damage done to my wallet at the same time. Thanks

JH:

I don't believe you will harm the tires or tubes with the lye. It should actually clean any oxidation/oils/mold releaase from the tires.

If you're nervous, try it on the just the tire surface of like a car tire, or a junk one.

It did not harm my old tires. It actually cleaned them really well.
