Are all COILS the same? 6V or 12V?

I need to replace the coil on my '59 430U having forgot and left the ignition on overnight. I have several coils collected over the years from various car motors. Will any coil work in 6 volt application, are do I specifically need a 6 volt coil?
Thanks

Prune Picker, look at the coils you have to see if either 6V or 12V is stamped in the coil can, if so start with the 6 volt.
~If you can't tell them apart, start with the coil with the lowest resistance between the two small terminals, more than likely that is a 6 volt coil. ~Then if you have a volt meter, measure the running voltage at the small coil small wire terminal that goes to the distributor points (if 5.5 or above you will be ok, if lower than 5 volts suspect a 12 volt coil). Some 12 volt coils with a built in resistor will measure lower on resistance until they get hot then the resistance will increase, so a cold resistance measurement is just a starting point. ~I think if you install a 12 volt coil you will know it, those 430's will hardly make enough spark with a 6 volt coil to keep from fouling plugs & the spark will be much lower if a 12 volt coil is used, especially when the coil supply voltage is down around 4 - 5 volts during cranking.
~If a new coil doesnt get you going, look for burnt points (sometimes they will turn blue if the ignition was left on with the points closed) or a failed ignition switch.

Prune, most 6 volt coils have approximately 1.2 ohms resistance in their primary winding (between + and - terminals), while most 12 volters are 1.5 up to 2 ohms. Since you have a 6 volt system, either would actually work, but the 6 volter would better. Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana

no, they're different - the coil should be marked for the proper voltage
