I have a styled B and it is very hard to steer.
Is something siezed up from not getting greased?
Seems to steer easier when backing up but mostly it
is a two handed grunt and pull type steering.
Any suggestion will be helpful
Thanks Garry

Looks like bearings are shot and will have to replace them. It turns up in the air but with weight on tires won't turn.

Garry, start by pulling the medallion and then the top cover on the steerign pedestal and checking the condition and lube in the worm gear and sector box. Wear can be adjusted for(horiziontal shaft end play plus worm to sector distance). Post back and let us know what you find there. Ol John T

John T and others have covered similar problems on some old massages. I went to the search feature above, and there's probably 30 old messages that deal with shimmy, wobble, hard steering, excessive play, etc.

I've included a link to a message that covered just about all the adjustments that you can perform. The search feature has been a real help to me !

Frank:

I had the same problem with the A I'm currently working on. Opened her up and found both bearings shot. Replaced them and all was well.. These bearings have a tendency to get abused. I would check them first. Hope all is well..

Randy:

Yes, you adjust the end play of the steering shaft by adding/deleting shims from the front cap. One bearing is at the front end of the worm gear, and another is behind it. You'd have to remove the steering shaft out the front to see the rear bearing.
