I knew I'd need to rebuild the engine on my H when I bought it a year and a half ago. I've been getting the external parts (carb, mag, radiator, etc.) in shape before I tear into it. Now I'm ready. I took it apart yesterday. The head doesn't look too bad, although I plan to do a valve job anyway. The cylinders had about a half inch of mud in them. They are pitted on the bottom side where all the stuff had accumulated. I guess I'll need to have them bored out. They've already been bored .030. Can I find pistons and rings for a larger bore? The pistons have 4 grooves but only 3 compression rings. The top grooves weren't used. Is it supposed to have a ring in that groove too? The crank had some dark places on it where the rods had been sitting in the same place a long time. Will it be ok, or should I have it turned? Anything else I should look at while I've got it opened up?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Frank

Frank, Maybe I can be of a little help. Sounds like your H has a set of the old 4 ring JD pistons. The top ring should have been in place. Sounds like you need boring to me. You can get .040,.060 & .090 over pistons, seeing as you are already at .030,I doubt .040 would clean it up. You can call C.B. Lindstrom (816-232-5868) for the pistons as well as all your H parts.Your crank may be ok, I'd polish it with fine emery roll and mic it. Best I remember standard is 2.062. If you have the old insert type rods you might be lucky and fine some inserts, they come in standard and .005 under. If you have the babbit type rods with shims and they are still round and show plenty of babbit, you can remove shims to get your proper clearance, (about .003). Of course if your babbit is gone and/or crank is in rough shape you'll have to grind and put in fresh babbited rods. Check out the main bearings, the flywheel side will probably show more wear. You'll want to look at the clutch hub/cam splines. These are bad to wear out on the 39H. Also check the cam bearings and gear that pulls the governor. The cam is the weak spot on the '39,(JD changed the cam and clutch in '40) What # do you have? My '39H is #9531, I also have a '41H. Tell C.B. Anthony in Alabama had you call. Hope this helps, HMan

HMan It sounds like you've been through this a time or two. I've got the babbit rods and they look ok I think. I guess I'll have to invest in a mic. to check the crank. I've bought from Lindstrom a couple of times already, and he's treated me right. He used to have a web site but I can't get to it anymore.
My H is # 3929 so I guess it's a bit older than yours. It's been a fun project and I still have a long way to go.
Thanks for the advice. I'm sure i'll have more questions later.

Frank, are you after a complete engine overhaul to the book or are you going to play with this tractor , If u pull the pistons out and hone it good u may be surprised what they look like when u are finished. I take a piece of wood or plastic machined with a hole in it for a rod to drive with and then split it half way and use some good rough emory and walk up and down the cylinders real good . Then check them out and see what they mic out . wipe the rods out good with some horsehair and check them out cuz the H did not have a shim pack . Hope all this helps out .
