Fuel problem with JD A, Help!

I have a 44 JD A. It starts great but after a few minutes it begins to sputter and die. I found that if I move the three way fuel switch just a little towards off it will perk right up and run for a minute or so then it starts to run out of gas so I move the switch back to on and it runs good again for a minute or two. So the only way to keep it running is to move that switch back and forth every minute or so. Ideas? Of course I'm just running gas in the front tank. Is there something going on with the valve between the two tanks? Thanks for your help!

You make it sound like your getting to much gas,and its starting to flood, then you turn it off and runs alright till the bowl is empty then you haVE TO turn the gas back on. If that is right I would check the needle and seat, the float level and also see if the float is leaking and has some gas in it to make it too heavy, in that order.

Lee:
Pull the valve apart and clean it out. Make sure the gas is getting through the valve without a problem. Make sure you are using a vented gas cap the gas can't get out if air can't get in.

Lee, those pesky 3 way valves can be a problem and even if you get it to run a good flow, tehn they often leak. I suggest you remove, disasemble and clean it thoroughly, then get a new packing seal from JD and reassemble it. I polish the mating surfaces first with a fine wire brush and then hardware cloth. Then be sure you have a good flow out teh sediment bowl because that often gets dirty and its inlet area there in teh tank bottom area gets clogged. Once you get good constant flow oyut the sed bowl, set the 3 way valve for its max flow and tehn tighten her down and I never use or turn them ever agian. I use the sed bowl turn off because they give far less problemes then that 3 way. Once the sed bowl and 3 way flow freely, then open the carbs bottom drain cock and see if the needle valve and seat allow a good flow. If the needle valve/seat are restricted, she sits and fills the bowl and runs fine till the bowls lever gets too low. Clean and flush that system and valve and if the carbs needle and float are ok, you should be fine. Ol John T

Lee, pull the valve off & see if there is something caught in the valve holes.
~Or the valve could be worn enough to seat deeper in the taper & the inner holes won't line up when in the on position.
~It wouldn't hurt to clean the strainer & tank fitting also. ~Try pulling the fuel line at the carb & see what the fuel flow actually is, if not line sized you have a restriction.....

Lee, I think you have a half stopped up 3 way valve so take it off and clean it real good and then put it back on and turn on the fuel and let it run into a can to make sure it stays flowing ,then it should run if the carb is clean .
