just bought new regulator, wired it up same as diagram, but even with low batt. still wont charge. how can i check the gen with a simple volt meter? How many volts should the gen put out just between the two poles on top alone? (fields and comutator.) any ideas? thanks Nick

Nick, first of all be sure the generator and the new regulator have good solid clean ground connections. The generator to the tractors frame and the regulator to the generators frame. After installation, did you polarize it by momentarily connecting (sparking) a jumper wire between the regulators Bat and Arm (or Gen) terminals??? If shes grounded and polarized but youre still not getting a charge (assuming the new regulator is ok), you either have a bad generator or you could have it mis wired or theres no connection between the Bat output on the regulaotr, through the ammeter, then to the battery (usually at the starter post). See if a test lamp shows battery voltage at the Bat terminal on the regulator??? That wire/terminal has to get to the battery to charge her, so if it dont show voltage its not gettign to the battery. If you have voltage there (youre never gonna charge the battery unless shes connected there !!!!! !), fire up the tractor and jump the Field lead out of teh generator to ground and see if she charges then. Also, jump the Bat and Gen (or Arm) on the VR together and see if you get a charge then. (disconnect before you shut down) If the field is grounded and you have voltage to the Bat terminal and if you connect the Bat and Gen wires together on the VR when shes runing and you still get no charge (assuming all is wired corect), you may ahve a bad generator. Try taking the belt off the generator and apply battery voltage to the Arm lead and see if she runs like a motor. A DC motor and generator are the same thing basically and if it will run like a motor it should charge. So, be sure you have connection between the regulators Bat terminal to the battery (usually through the ammeter then to the battery or starter terminal), polarize her, ground the field, try connect Bat to Gen (arm) and let us know what you get. Bad grounds or missing connections between Bat on VR and the battery itself are common problems. Good Luck Ol John T in Indiana
