Thanks for your advice but what do you mean by fix the vent pump? Do you have to replace it or exactly what I am not sure what my next step should be. Thanks again

Playfarmer:

When my vent pump failed, it was because one of the rollers had galled into the face of the cover plate, so it could not be in the position to pump. Then the other hung up, and no pumpage.

I removed the fan shaft, dissassembled it, and had the casting face ground (to remove the galling and true it up, checked and replaced the rollers, and reassembled it.

It's just a lot of work to get to it all. Watch the governor gear shim pack, but that's how you fix it.

Thanks Frank I guess I didn't know what was in the fan shaft. I wonder if my problem is just from dirt restricting the flow of air because I ran it last night to haul a bale of hay and everything seemed to be ok. There is a lot of old grud in the vent(pipe?) so I guess I need to disassemble that and clen it all up. I need to replace the seal in the fan shaft anyway as it is leaking and making a big mess. This is on the fan end. Its looks like to me that I have to take the hood off just to remove the vent pipe, is that correct? Anyway thanks for your time and advice. I really do appreciate what I learn on this discussion board. PF

PF:

This is a '48 "A", right ? By vent pipe if you mean the pcv tube from the valve cover to the carb inlet pipe, that can come off at belt buckle level. If you mean the carb inlet pipe, you just reach up in there and loosen the hose clamp and slide it down.

Now if you mean the main air cleaner assembly, yes, you have to remove the hood, then the three bolts on the top, break the 40 year old gasket loose and take it out.

It will be a good candidate for a hot water and lye bath, or have it cooked out at a radiator shop. There can be two acres of dirt up in there, but that probably wasn't causing your white smoke.

You know you can test that vent pump. See if it draws a playing card down against the open end of the oil fill pipe. If the vent pump is working properly, it should suck it fast.
