I ahve a 1965 JD 4020 D. I was told that to get more horsepower out of it the first thing I should do is get rid of the oil air cleaner. Is this true? if so does anyone know where I would find the parts I need and how much this could end up costing me.

turn up the fuel delivery in the injector pump for more power.

More fuel requires more air to burn clean. Washing the lube oil down off the cylinder walls & wet stacking the exhaust while sending unburnt carbon (blake smoke) up the stack, wastes fuel/money. A late 4020 dry aircleaner and a low restriction muffler from a turbo equiped tractor will help some. If she's over matched,it's better in the long run to get a larger tractor or pull a smaller load.

I generally agree except that some John Deere tractors repsond well to turning up the fuel delivery since they were overbuilt to start with. 2520s,3020s, 4020s, and some of the newer tractors included. The 4020 was always good for an extra 8-10 horse on the dyno with no deleterious side-effects except for some visible black smoke when you really worked it. In fact I did my neighbors back in 1979. He's got 12,000 engine hours on it and it still runs fine. Some of the 40 and 50 series JD tractors came undertuned and 20 horsepower gains were common - with no modifications except the fuel delivery. Many other tractors, though, don't respond well and just wind up smoking and running hot.

I don't really use the tractor much and am planning on having the pump worked on soon. A few of my friends mentioned the air cleaner to me, so I decided I should check it out. Does anyone have a air cleaner they would sell, or know of a place that would have one. I could probably order a new one from Deere, but i am sure it will cost a fortune. Any help is greatly appreciated!
