It seems that the biggest challenge is getting the motor to turn over on the first compression stroke. After she is rolling it will crank fine. Also it seems to want to fire on the first compression stroke which compounds the problem. One day when I was day dreaming I thought of the procedure for cranking the recip helicopter engines. You first engaged the starter, let the motor start flipping over a few times and then put the ignition swithch to both mags, and she fired off. I tried this on my 420 and walla. If I pull the start knob with my right hand and with the left, flip the ignition to on after the first compression stroke, I can bet my lunch money on it firing on the next compression stroke (with the choke preset to whatever it needs). Give it a try and let us know.

Henry, you might want to check your ignition timing, it sounds like the timing is either a little too far advanced or the distributor weights are sticking....

I had a 440 crawler loader and never had any trouble starting it and I had to turn a big hydraulic pump. I used the original 6 volt system.this engine tested 150 lbs compression. I made heavy battery cables out of welding cable, this is needed to carry the amperage because on 6 volts that is what gets you going,I also rebuilt my starter make sure you have the heavy duty one with four full sized field coils as some of them only have two field coils. These are the two most important things to do besides a complete tune up. This will make your starter turn it over if you had a good battery I also found that a 6 volt battery was only good for 3 years light use in this machine. I could take them
out of the 440 and run them in a model H jd for a few more years.
