starts good and idles good. but once in the field and on a slight pull, engine starts surging, blowing black smoke and losing power. Any ideas? The mag was rebuilt recently but it was doing this before mag rebuild. Does not have a bright spark. Spark is kind of orange!

farmuse, those symtoms on a late model B can be caused by the choker coil spring. The dowell pins on the choke shaft wear & slip past each other to the wrong position. This causes the choke to stay partly closed. Tractor runs OK at no-load but when a load causes the governor to open the throttle, then the choke starts to control the air stream velocity. You can check for this by loosening the air input elbow & looking into the carb.

Farmuse, what kind/model mag are you working with?
~What was done to the mag on overhaul? Was a new coil installed. (let us know)
~Where is your base ignition timing set? (mag should snap when LH/impulse mark on flywheel lines up with case mark behind flywheel)
~The orange spark doesn't sound good, are you running solid metal core plug wires? Or auto type carbon core? (if not solid metal core, replace them)
~Try new spark plugs just to eliminate that as a concern.
~Does turning the load needle have any effect on how it pulls under load? (try different settings on the load needle)
~You could possibly have a plugged or plugging air cleaner inner wire screen or water in the air cleaner cup. Try new oil in the cup & if no help, try running with the air inlet tube at the carb disconnected.
~If all ok in the above, do a compression test, then make sure you dont have any valves that the adjustment tightened up on

Clooney there was a new coil installed. Not sure of the make of magneto. Someone here local said it was the govenor wear causing the problem. Tractor is on another farm will check all these and get back to you. Thanks for the response.
