When you engage the pto on my 430 it does not engage completely. If I hold the lever over to the right the pto will buzz like it is not getting all the way engaged or a gear is stripped. I have not gone into the tractor yet but suspect either a stripped gear or the lever/linkage needs adjusting. Anyone have any experience with this?

I am sure you have live pto. Take a look at it this way also. Turn the motor off. Then try to engage the pto. If it feels like it slips in and it stays in when you start the motor, you may have the same problem that I do on my 420. The pto clutch has went south for some reason or another. On mine, if I try to engage it like it is supposed to work, all it does is grind against the gears because the clutch is not disengaging. Just a thought.

Bguy, do you have the parts book on the trans? Most likely you do not have any stripped gears. This linkage assembley has lots of fragile parts. You can take the plug out at the bottom of the trans. and check the small spring and poppet ball. You will have to go into the trans. to check the shaft or fork for wear or damage. Also you might try removing the roll pin and remove the shift lever and see if you can get it into gear using a pair of vise grips, if so something is bent or worn. Also inside, there is a special set screw that holds the fork in position, this may have slipped. There is no actual adjustment on the linkage.

Wayne, Yes I have a parts manual and I saw the fork and pin you speak of in it. I guess I can remove the top cover to check this, right?
Thanks, Bguy (also in Tn.)

Bguy, Yes you can maybe find the problem by removing the top cover. But to do any repairs you will have to break the tractor into to disasemble the trans. Also in order to remove the powershaft you will have to remove the final drives. I have done this twice on 4 speeds lately. If you have the service manual it is not too complicated. This is a good time to check all bearings and the shims for end play adjustment. I have compiled a crossover chart for most of the bearings and seals to avoid the high cost from Deere. If you would like a copy, send me your e-mail address. It was compiled for a 40 but most of the bearings will be the same. Where in Tn. are you? I am in Cypress Inn. Good luck, Wayne.

Wayne, I sure wish you hadn't said the part about breaking the tractor in half. I would sure hate to do that, but I may have too. If I do I will get back with you for the bearing crossover list and maybe some more guidance in the details of what to do and expect. I'm just north of Nashville in Goodlettsville, about an hour and a half from you.
Thanks for the response.
