Out of fear I may have some wiper assembly leaking problems causing my pump seals to blow. I have decided to dive into that dis-assembly in addition to my rebuilding my power steering pump. My power steering manual (SM2050) on page 10-30-3 says as a part of the dis-assembly procedure, to jack up the tractor, remove spindle extension and front wheel assembly from tractor. Is this really necessary to inspect for broken vane pins and to replace seals if all other dis-assembly procedures are followed?

I want to be extremely careful in this area since I have never broken apart a column assembly like this before.

Would like the opinion of those who have been there before.

Thanks

Dick

Dick, before you tear that spindle apart, was the steering working ok prior to the pump seals blowing? ~Did fluid blow out the cap vent?
~Is the cap vent open? (It is the fine stone type filter in the top of the P/S reservoir cap).
~If the cap vent works & it didn't pass fluid from the cap top you probably aren't passing pressure into the suction side of the system.
~If the fluid isn't blowing back out of the reservoir (run it with the cap off) my guess would be you had a sticking pressure relief or flow control valve in the steering valve or other restriction in the pressure side. ~If the cap vent is plugged it might have built pressure on the low (suction) side, but I can't believe it would build enough to blow pump seals (but you never know). Even enough moisture in the oil will cause problems if it gets hot enough to form steam
~You can pull the upper spindle housing (the one that covers the vanes ) without pulling the lower spindle, but that is not the best way to do it. If you are going to go to all the trouble to pull the spindle apart, you might as well remove the whole unit & replace the vanes & all the "O" rings or it will just be a matter of time until the lower "O" ring starts leaking.

Thanks Clooney

I have no evidence of leaks any where except the fron seal that blew on the pump. The steering was working great right up to the point of the seal blowing. It was smooth and quiet. There was a gentlemen that posted to me about six weeks ago(of whom I forgot who it was) that said he felt I had wiper vane problems. That is where my fear comes from.

I think I am going to chance it and not tear down the cylinder.

Thank you Clooney for all you do for us.

Dick

On the 520 I just helped do, we removed the 4 big bolts under the spindle but jacked her up and let the wide front axle remain in place. Used a chain hoist to lift off the PS unit then separated the round lower unit where those wiper seals are to replace them. Twas a dirty nasty greasy slimy job. Ol John T

Thanks, are you then saying that the column can not be pulled up off of the steering column shaft if the retaining bolt is removed at the top first. Don't know if I made my question clear or not.
