I am just at my wits end in trying to get this 37 B to hand start easy, takes about 20 turns. Runs good Idles good. Using same mag that starts my 38 A on 3 or less turns. Will hold your hand to the intake manifold for at least 20 seconds. Going thru carb for second time including the power valve which was clean. Seems impossible to flood, gave it 4 turns with full choke and no gas on plugs. Any ideas. Russ

CLOONEY--you need a Break...!!!!! !!!

Thanks for ALL of your HELP...!!!!!

As for the "B"---I would try to give it a little "Prime" from an oil can (with Gas), or at least a "Sniff" of ether in the intake, and see if it tries to start-----Before I choked it...just to avoid wet plugs from flooding, from over-choking, and at about 1/8th throttle.... Someone will dispute this, BUT it takes less Spark to fire the mixture at reduced throttle settings....Compression pressure tends to be lower- especially at idle...

Just tried a carb that floods my other tractor easy. 6 cranks and still dry plugs. compression is so high I can hardly spin it over. Plugs new, wires read 0 (copper) Mag starts my other tractor fine, and shot some carb cleaner down the troat and not even a pop. going to send in the original mag for check. Thanks for all the help. Russ

Russ, how bad are your valve guides? If they are worn out & leaking, a slow intake stroke with a closed choke would allow air to enter the intake through the valve guides & by-pass the carb & choke. Your compression could still be good if the valves seal once closed.
~If they are suspect, force some heavy grease around the intake valve stems to seal the stem to guides & try to start it.
~If the intake tract is sealed good, & the choke is closing, & you have decent compression, & the carb is functioning good, you should be able to flood that "B" in just a few turns of the flywheel..... ..

This is not my tractor, the owner said he had rings, valve grind, and push rod tubes changed. Tried a carb off my 38 A which will squirt gas out the petcock after one turn, put it on the B and after 6 turns with full choke still dry plugs. You may have something with quides, but if you hold your hand over the carb while cranking there is quite a bit of suction. I have worked on about 12 of these old ones and never had one I could not get going, but I am nearing 70 and this one has got me beat. This one has so much compression I can hardly spin if over. I saw a guy start a b with one hand I wish I had that one. Thanks so much for your interest, will report any improvement. Russ

Russ, make sure the choke is actually closing completely & the plate isn't bent, or that the little spring loaded choke plate door isn't missing (if equipped with one).... Loose throttle shaft bushings will also let air by-pass the choke system. ~If you are sure you are getting a BLUE spark that will jump a 3/16"+ gap & the choke is working, you are left with the possibility of a compression issue at low hand cranking speeds (run a cold hand cranking speed compression test & see what you get with one turn of the flywheel), or a carb problem such as low float level or plugged holes in the side of the main nozzle. ~I see you are going to try a different carb, that is a great place to start & should eliminate that as a problem.
~If you have old gasoline, premium gasoline or gas with alcohol in it, replace it with fresh regular non-alcohol gasoline.
~As others have said, try different throttle settings, choke settings & Idle/load needle adjustments. (try backing the load & idle screws out about 1-2 turns for starting only)

My 38B starts in 2 or 3 pulls with 1/3 throttle and 3/4 closed choke.

Russ, Try about half throttle with the choke on, and the pidcocks closed. Mine is the same way, and I finally hit this combination, and it starts up pretty good now. It seems to take a lot of gas to get it going. I would be flooding any other JD the way I have to start my B, but it works. I have new rings and valves on mine, so it is some effort to start it with the trycocks closed, but that seems to work best. Good luck.

Mine has no petcocks, and even with about 4 turns will not fire with choke on. Going to try another carb and see if there is any difference. thanks. Russ
