clooney if you would get me a fax no. I will be glad to fax you some pages out of john deere and wico manuels. And if Randy would look in jd sm-2000 on pg 40-25-6 and on 40-25-10 he would see a picture also plus text that says second mark from left. Please note on top of each page that it is referring to wico x & c. On page 40-25-23 it refers to what Clooney was saying. This is Under Edison heading at top and is just a generalization. This holds true on all wico mags except the 6274 drive cup for short lug deeres and 3744 for long lug, the straight up mark goes from 12.5 to 3 degrees and for what its worth on a 6 cyl. it is 33degrees. Clooney please understand that it is the cup that establishes the lag angle, not the stop ring. The stop ring is a feature of Wico mags that let you fine tune the timing. On Fairbanks, bosch, case and Intl. you dont have that luxury, you can only change from ccw to cw and your lag is set at what ever impulse cup you have on.There are cups available for 15,20,25 30,35 degrees etc. Wico even made a cup that was long lug, but for 25 degrees just for the people who were converting JD D's over to gas. And yes the 909 did go cw and the witness mark is set 4.5 timing marks from the right per pg 40-25-6.They also made an adjustable drive cup that let you dial in any degree you wanted. Now please understand Clooney I was only trying to help and I will fax you these sheets, sorry I dont have a scanner, and you can then decide if this is all correct.Or email me with your telephne no and I will call you. If we lived close it would be so easy to show you on a running timing wheel how this all works. I have 3 of them maybe you would be interested in buying one. I am grateful for all the good advice that you put on the board and have used alot of it.

I see what you are talking about on page 40-25-6 but it doesn't give the degrees that go with that setting. Im refering to page 40-25-3 that shows 25 degrees are 2 1/2 graduations to the left of the 12 1/2 degree center witness mark. The sm 2000 is all I have to go on so I will be interested to see what Clooney has to say after he looks at your fax.

Rod, I would be very interested in the Wico info you can provide. Maybe you can teach an old dog a new trick.
~If you E-mail me your E-Mail address I will send you my FAX number (don't want to post it as I don't want to receive a multitude Tractor related Faxes like I do E-Mails, I don't mind the E-mails but that many faxes would be a problem) ~I have an old dog eared version of SM-2000 & will check the pages shown. ~I don't totally agree that it is all the cup that establishes the lag angle on a Wico "C" & "X" as the stop ring is part of the equation & has the ability to vary the lag angle as much as 25*. ~I don't understand how a 25* & 35* cup can both be set at 2 marks from the extreme left & be correct. Maybe your data sheets can point to something I am missing.
~I just checked the SM-2000 & sure enough it says to set the initial lag to 2 from the left. It also says that the lag is set "in the approximate correct lag angle when overhauled (assembled) & should be run on a drive fixture to adjust the lag angle correctly", it also says to set the lag angle to specifications & refers to the lag angle chart that gives different settings for the C & X that very from 20* to 35*. This appears to me to all be set up around a 12.5* center mark & seems to be confirmed with the 'lag angle diagram' along with hash mark vs. lag angle settings (12.5 center & 5* per mark).
~Thanks for offering to sell one of your timing wheels, I sold my Allen rotor magnetizer & electrical servicer about 20 years ago because I wasn't using them & kind of wish now that I hadn't. The rotors are cheap & easy to send out to be magnetized, but a timing wheel would be handy for intermittent mag problems on those pesky Edison Splitdorfs...Clooney

Good going guys, keep us informed as this is a great topic for us all. So that is why the cups are marked with detgrees? Here I thought it was so it was easy to see. lol.
Are we saying now on a 38 D I should have a 25 degree cup? I have been just setting the timing to where it cranks out the most on the dyno. Can't remmber what it has now, but will pull and check.
Keep the great info coming guys, were all listening.

I forgot to address your last question and I hope this doesnt confuse things, but the long lug 35 degree cup doesnt convert the straight up mark to 3, it stays at 12.5, then you count over 4 timing marks and you end up at 32.5 or the 2nd mark from the left, same as short lug, thus there all at 2nd mark from left. This was supposed to keep things simple for the techs in the field who had along 1 mag and both cups. Looking forward to sending you this info. Im going to try your method on the flywheel this weekend , between the 2 it should come out perfect. Thanks

Wow this is neat. I look forward to all the details and both of you please share your findings so myself and others may benefit from this in depth research. Thanks Ol John T
