jdman,

I just did some work on a '37 B that had the brass filter, I went to JD and they ordered all the parts needed to convert from the brass to the paper filter. Got it converted over without very much trouble at all and it all works great.
There were only three parts to replace.
1)Oil Filter Stud
2)Oil Filter Outlet assy. (Provides the nipple the original brass has on top of it)
3)Oil filter bottom

In the farmall 20 (those red tractors) origional catalog those brass filters (purolator) came in different densities (how close those wire openings were) and John Deere used the same filters in different sizes. the brass filter makes a good display to look at, but, i would use a good paper filter instead.

According to the parts book the first 80,999 tractors use the metal filter, I am not sure that the paper filter can be interchanged. There is about a 1 inch nipple on the end of the brass filter. Russ

The f-20 paper filter is built the same way (with the 1" nipple) I'll check to see what the measurements are. If you cannot reuse the brass filter because the wire winding came loose, you will not have a filter, unless you can find the upgrade parts that i am sure J.D. made available for field changeover.-----ok i went out and took out the oil filter on the f-20 and measured it. the main barrel is 6" long. the nipple at the bottom is tapered slightly and is 1" long by 1" across. the hole at the top is 1/2" wide thru a 1/2" raised nipple. if these measurements are the same as your brass filter then you are looking for a Wix 51125.....
