Why not use hyguard in the power steering. I got my 720 running. But my power steering is leaking at the value actuating sleeve. How hard is to fix. I did put some hyguard in my power steering. Ihope Idonot make a new problem.

Rooster-I have been using Hy-gard in my 630 since the rebuild in 1995. Have not seen any problems and put around 70 to 100 hrs a year on the tractor. luckydog

Rooster

If i were you I would not fret about the Hygrade you put in the PS. If it bothered me I would drain out what i could and add ATF. I approach the tender loving care of my 420 this way. When I bought the little orphan it had been neglected and abused for decades. It had mud, sludge, and maybe even bacon drippings in use. It seems to be very happy with new compatible fluids I put in it and to quote a famous person, it runs like a deer. PS I work this tractor. It is gonna take a whole lot more than you talked about to damage a deere. Personally, I feel confident that Clooney's suggestion is the way to go to stop that leak.

Rooster, JD would not still make the PS fluid if Hy-Gard would work as well. I don't know the reasons you should use PS instead, but I know you should. Maybe one of our engineering types can help us out here. I nearly put Hy-Gard in the steering system of a 630 I worked on, but decided to check to see if the specified fluid was still available. Sure enough, there it was.

Only use John Deere power steering fluid in 2 cylinder deere, unless you like fixing leaks.

Rooster, it should have a seal in the housing bolted on the rear that the actuating sleeve runs through. Remove the steering shaft, then unbolt the housing & replace the seal.

Rooster, you can do whatever you want - it's your tractor. But it would seem to me that since your going to be doing work to the system anyway, and will probably go to your JD dealer for parts, it would make sense to install the specified fluid. I have no doubt that there are lots of tractors running around with Hy-Gard and who knows what else in the power steering system. However, I will quote to you what it says on the front of a quart of JD PS fluid: " This oil meets John Deere specification JDT312 and can be used in closed-circulation systems in which both lubricating and hydraulic action are required. Specially formulated high quality fluid for use in power steering systems of John Deere Tractors manufactured prior to 1960". You can draw your own conclusion from that, but I can tell you that John Deere probably knows more about what is proper for their tractors than you, I or anyone else posting on this board. Just my two cents.

I worked at an international truck dealer once 4 years ago and they sold a power steering fluid
for their trucks . It had the same look ,feel, and smell,as the JD fluid does.No I didn't taste it! I wonder if it came out of the same factory ? The price was about the same as the JD stuff.

That could be, Mike. You never really know where that stuff comes from. I got to thinking some more about the PS fluid. I wonder if it has something to do with the gear pump they used on those tractors. I know regular hydraulic oil is used in a lot of systems with gear pumps, but that was one thought that came to mind. I also wonder if it is specified because of the type of seal material that is used in the various parts of the system. The world may never know, but I will continue to use JD PS fluid in any system I work on, lol.
