620 Power Steering Pump Removal

I am finally getting into rebuilding my 620 power steering pump. In previous posts it was suggested that the radiator can be moved forward a couple of inches to gain access to the fan assembly keepers. I am at that point and I guess I need some more advice on how to get to compress the fan spring to get the keepers out. I guess I could dis-assemble the pedestal and move it out of the way of the radiator.

I have always been and will always be a John Deere loyalist. But I would like to visit with the original engineers as to why they put the pump where they did.

AQny advise would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Dick

Popper, we just did 3 of those including a 620. We pull the fan the pump after its removed from the fan shaft tube (just 2 bolts). Then, we remove the 2 lower radiator bolts and it will go forward enough to remove the fan and pump (remove that tin fan shroud also). To remove the fan, we spray the end splines with PB Blaster and use 2 big pairs of water pump pliers to compress teh spring and remove the keepers. Dont forget to check the fan clutces and read above (60 PS Leak ?) about seal installation. We used a new bearing and woodruff key also in teh gears. Good Luck Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana

Thanks John T

For yours and Clooney's great help. I already have the tractor tore down to the point of the radiator assembly being move as far forward as possible to the pedestal assembly. I previously purchased two seals and will today order two more. Approximately a month or six weeks ago a post was made to me about suspecting the wiper pin being brokens as a prime reason for seals blowing out. Mine blew out while brushhogging one day showering me with hydraulic fluid. The spray back covered the whole tractor, me and the brushhog when she blew. What is your comment on this.

Thanks

Dick

Dick, I always pull the pump off the rear fan tube & pull the pump fan & all. If you decide to try it that way, as the pump starts to separate from the rear fan tube, reach in & make sure the rear fan inner shaft doesn't try to move forward with the pump (you will find it is a real pain to re-install). Sometimes the coupling will bind a little & pull the rear shaft forward until it falls out of the rear coupling if not careful.
~I haven't pulled the fan from the pump while in the tractor for many years, but can say that if you do, be very careful you don't damage the radiator (use a piece of plywood or sheet of metal to protect the radiator core while working on the fan & keepers.

Thanks Clooney,

I actually thought of that today but thought I better make a post to those that have done it before. There is something to be said for "Being safe rather than Sorry" I am glad you warned me to make shure I don't pull the fan shaft forward.

Thank you

Dick
