I recently purchased a 1953 Model 50,equipped with a WICO XB 4023 dist.which is totally shot.
Calling around for another one I am geting the word that these are somewhat hard to find in good condition and the parts ,coils etc.from suppliers are somewhat unreliable.
Two suppliers have suggested switching to a new mag.and trashing the dist.Just change the hot wire to the dist. to a grounded kill switch.I have been quoted $225.00 for a mag.sounds cheaper and less troublesome than trying to go the dist.route.
Any comments good or bad about the idea? The tractor will be used for small tasks and not show, just want it to run good. Was the 50 available with a mag?My parts book doesn't show one.
Any help appreciated.

Alvin,as Todd suggested, the delco distributor is the way to go.They are inexpensive to maintane, and reliable. With the Delco you can go one step further and convert it to electronic ignition, and make it almost maintenance free (no points,or condenser). If you are interested in either or both ,give my shop a call ,and I can quote you some prices. To answer your other question .Wico X mags were available for a "50".And you are right ,they are'nt shown in the parts book ,but they are listed in the old accessory catalogs.Bob,from Triple G Service.1-176-542-3175 , 9am-8pmEST.

Bob,

I believe you have a typo. Your A/C is 716 instead of 176 according to info I've seen before.

Use a Delco distributor, such as one used with the 60 and 70. It will fit late A, B, G, D, 50, 60, & 70. Not sure of what they are going for, but it would be cheaper than $225.

There was a used delco distributor on EBAY in the machinery/parts under "deere" search it was at $75.00 last night 4-8-02 would be worth a try.
