I took the governor apart on my 1944 A yesterday and find that there are fine metal shavings scattered-about on the inside. I can see that it appears that these shavings came from (were shaved-off of) one of the weights. What might have cause this? How hard is it to fix? I am not a mechanic, but am ready to try, so please make suggestions accordingly. How much damage could these shavings have caused? I look forward to any suggestions. Thanks very much.

Have you tried to operate the engine with the rod not connected between the gov. and the carb? That is a very quick way to chew up the gov. weights! Was one of the weights not in place?

Yes, the retaining pin came loose from the connecting rod and the engine did operate for a short time (until I could get it shut-down) without it being connected. I am not sure whether I would be able to tell if the weights are where they are suppose to be or not. What should I look for? How much of a problem is it to fix this? Thanks.

The very first thing you have to remember is DO NOT repeat DO NOT try to put the governor cover back on until you remove the magneto(or dist.) usually if you do you will break off the lower piece of the mag. casting. That said the rest of the governor shaft should come out to inspect the weights, pivot pins and their attachment to the fanshaft drive gear. If you have access to a I&T manual for 2 cyl. john deeres that would help. If someone could scan you a couple of pictures from the JD 60 service manual(they use the same gear/weight setup as A's sn less than 583999) maybe this would help.

JKC follow GWH's directions on removal and installation.I have one thing to add the little arms protruding down from weights, they go between the slide mechanicnism and the gov.gear,I know this don't look right, that slide mechanism has a slot they fit in just perfect, but take my word for it they go behind slide mechanism. I inadvertenly put them in the wrong place on my puller and come a hair over revving it.Hope this helps Gman
