I was wondering if you all could help me? I'm a young farmer(24)takin over the family farm and renting some ground on my own. our equipment has some age on it but I happen to thinks its the best there is. I'm running a couple of 95 deere combines, 68 and 69 models, and some 4020's. I'm wanting to play with one of them and see how much extra horse I can gain. It's a 64 model 4020 diesel with a powershift transmission. I've already purchased an M&W exhaust manifold and elbow to put a blower on it. I was wondering if there are any other things I can do to improve my horsepower and pullin power and still keep it where its a field tractor. I dont want to get too radical! Thanks for all your help in advance.....Joshua

Josh, I don't want to rain on your parade ,but take some advise from and old Mechanic. If you need more power get a bigger tractor. I have put on those M/W turbos and if you want to burn up a good tractor then this is the quickest way I know to do it. If you need more power, go find a 4320 or 4620, they were made for the hp and dont cost much either. M&W recomended 110 for 4010 and 115 for a 4020 if you want it to live. You say that you have a lot of smoke now , the turbo will clean up the smoke and the power will be abt. right. For what its worth. Don

You may also want to get the injector pump turned up a bit with the turbo on there.

Try and locate a M&W oil pan for the 4020. Your tractor could use the larger oil pan for cooling purposes. Install an exhaust temp gauge so that you don't melt your tractor.

A larger radiator fan can also be installed to help cool the tractor.

M&W made a 20qt aluminum pan and a 8 blade & shroud kit for the 4020 . Far as I know they aren't available and haven't been for quite a while . Now and then I see them in classifides and at auctions but it has been a while . Might check these classifides though I don't recall one recently .
If your 4020 is in good shape ie. COOLING SYSTEM , fuel system ,the rest of the engine , transmission pressure up to max and the rest of the powertrain you can run it 120-25hp and NO MORE for field work and it will hold together . Don't forget you are increasing hp by 25% in a 38yr old tractor . Injection pump will need to be modified also as mentioned above . It will probably have to be taken apart to get the fuel increased enough . I have a '64 Powershift with turbo , pan , fan and a few more goodies , it is not used for heavy field work , just a chore tractor , mowing , auger work baleing etc and tractor pulling . Great old tractor .

Josh, you are not too far from me. I live near Arbela which is close to Memphis. I have two 4020's that have run close to 130 h.p. for many years (naturally aspirated). I thought about putting a turbo on one years ago but didn't want to cut another hole in the hood to do it. There are a few "cheap and easy" things to do to your 4020 to wake it up. Email me if you have any questions. Mike

Not a thing. Grew up 1/2 mile west of L. By the way-have the pulling sled contract for the farm stock pull at the Henry Co. fair in June. I think I have dropped the hammer on JDJIM's 4020 a few times.

ISP has the Sunday afternoon show. Farm stock classes are 7000 and 10000# Henry Co. only. I Bet you know about that game. Two ISP truck classes + two stock truck classes. 7000 ISP tractors + 7000 light limited pro smokers. I think Outlaws are running on Thursday.
