Some guy at the local Agway is trying to sell me on the idea that home heating oil would make an adequate full time substitute for diesel in my JD950. I have never heard this before, but also have very little experience with my new diesel. I can't imagine there being no consequenses with gelling, cold starting or smoking? Am I wrong or is this guy nuts?

The driver for the company that takes our waste engine oil claims it is processed as a component of home heating oil. I don't know that this happens for sure.

One thing to remember. If you live in the north in about October they start mixing anti gelling additive into the diesel fuel. Home heating oil that is to be delivered for an inside or below ground tank does not have it. So make sure you put additive in the tank in the fall or you should be able to purchase winterized fuel oil. Otherwise #2 oil is the same as diesel it's just the taxes. Fuel oil is dyed red to signify that it has no road tax on it.

I worked at an oil terminal that brought fuel in by barge, and sold it over a truck loading rack, and I know for a fact that a lot of that #2 fuel oil was sold as diesel. Many of the jobbers would fill thier fuel tanks with the delivery hose.

Depending on where the barge loaded, some oil looked clearer or more refined. The jobbers selling fuel oil for diesel used to get annoyed if the oil looked cloudy.

That was over 25 years ago, the federal penalty for burning fuel oil in a road vehicle is pretty damn stiff now, and any thing you saved would cetainly be offset by a substantial fine if you were caught. But you can still put what ever you want in your tractors and other off road vehicles. The fuel and the diesel are colored now, so that it is easy to tell if someone is using fuel oil for diesel, but in those days many trucks loaded fuel oil on their trucks and delivered it to diesel customers.

CND - I have a friend who drives a fuel delivery truck and he says diesel and what we call furnace oil are one and the same thing. When diesel prices went up, he would bill a delivery to a gravity tank as furnace oil - all the same - at least around here !

CND10BEST, about all you can do is call your oil supplier to see what they sell. ~Most #2 home heating oil is close to Diesel but can have different additives for storage & might not have the C-tane rating needed for heavy load work. It used to be the same in my area.
~I don't use heating oil to heat my home so don't know what is being sold in my area now.....

CND10BEST:

When we got our first diesel tractor (the 70), we we were anxious to try it out, but it needed fuel. We phoned our local fuel and oil supplier to tell him we needed a gravity tank and fuel pretty quick. He told us he couldn't get out there with a tank for few days, and to go ahead and use the #2 heating oil as it was the same stuff he would be putting in our gravity tank. When he did finally get out there with a tank, he filled the house tank, then the gravity tank, and that was that. While he was at it, he filled the tractor, all out of the same batch.

I'm sure there will be a host of opinions on this, but that's my experience, which is #2 heating oil and #2 diesel fuel are the same stuff.
