Hi,I posted a question about why there was an extra tank in with the remains of a J.D.430 which I have recently acquired.Well this tank looks like a miniature fuel tank and fits under the hood as well.I solved the mystery.I found the srial tag on the loader ,it was a J.D.loader and upon checking in a box, found that the front mount pump is also J.D.So I figure this tractor was factory equiped with a loader and the tank was the hydraulic oil supply tank.Tracthrob.

Tractor Rob

I think the JD loader made to fit the 430 was surely a #35. If so according to the loader book and the loader Mounted on my tractor, the #35 did not require or use a hydro tank. Possibly someone switched the loader around and used an external pump with a supply tank, but it would appear to me that the room under the hood would be scarce for a nyd tank. JD did have an all fuel option for the 430 whick would come from the factory with a small tank under the hood that gasoline went in for start up and shut down. If the small tank does not have big hyd type fittings on it I would still bet that you may have an all fuel 430.

Look on the side of the oil pan, if it came as an All Fuel tractor, there should be a petcock there to drain the fuel that accumulates in the oil pan.If so the small tank is probably for gasolene. These tanks are rare as they were thrown away years ago. A reproduction tank costs over $300 now. I would get a parts book and compare the picture with my tank to verify what it is.

Yes,I looked at the small tank again and it has hydraulic type fittings and a breather cap just like the crankcase breather cap.I don't know how or where the tank was placed since the tractor was disassembled back to the trans. It doesn't matter anyway as there are enough bits and pieces missing to make this a parts machine.Thank-you for your time.

Just make sure it's not an all fuel that has been modified by a tinker during the past 42 years. Many LP & all fuel tractors have been modified to gasoline having the value lost & forgotten. Aux hydraulic reservoirs are a rectangular box mounted by the drivers seat. The main fuel tank would have to be an allfuel to make room for a hydraulic tank where the gasoline starting tank belongs. Hydraulic fittings may have been soldered on to the small gasoline tank. Scrapping an allfuel would be like tossing out a winning lottery ticket. Of 14,939 430's made & only 418 were all fuel.LP is even rarer at only 213 units. Info courtesy of J.R.Hobbs's book "JD 30 Series 2nd Edition".

I checked the oil pan for a petcock as Wayne in Tenn. pointed out and there was not one there. It's about a 2 gal. cap. tank.

Bob

I think Wayne meant the oil pan on the tractor motor.
