I have about 1 hours running time on a completely rebuilt John Deere LA engine. It has cylinders bored out .020 to accommodate a set of new .020 pistons and rings. The valves and valve guides are new. All new main and rod bearings. The engine smokes some, giving off a blue, not black smoke. Is this a matter of letting the pistons and rings seat in or what? Otherwise, the engine runs very well.

I would think that if you are still seeing blue smoke after any assembly oil is buned there is something wrong with the rings/bore.

What was the new ring end gap? Should have been around 0.011 inch.

AWB, I'm not that familiar with the LA engines so there could be some reason particular to the LA that your engine is puffing some blue smoke.
~If everything is new as you say & it is puffing a little blue smoke, it could very well be the rings aren't seated yet or it still hasn't burnt the assembly oil from the lower ring grooves.
~Now that you have about an hour run time on it you might make it do a little work, like pulling your truck around or pulling a bigger tractor. Sometimes a little work is all that is needed to seat rings & burn away all the assembly oil.
~You didn't use synthetic oil, Deere plus 50 oil, or put any oil additives like Slick 50 or Lucas in the oil did you? If so drain it & use regular oil (the cheaper the better) or a break-in type oil.
~If the oil smoke doesn't go away after a load is placed on the engine or after a few more hours of run time, post back.

Assuming the rings were end gapped properly, I wouldnt worry too much yet until the rings have more time to seat into the new cylinder walls. Run her at different RPM's during the break in and keep the oil checked of course and see what happens. Good Luck Ol John T

AWB, did you use chrome rings? Most parts places want to sell the chrome and I always insist they order steel. It takes the chrome a long time to seat. Try getting the temperature up and run it at different speeds, maybe they will seat.

Are you using JD Break-in oil..????

You should be...or it may never seat the rings...!!
