If the linkage checks out as directed by the other posts, the problem is likley the aluminum arm that engages the lock piston in the valve housing. The traction/pto shift valve assembly will have to come off the side of the transmission. Once it is off, there is a tin cover held on with a small screw. Under this coveris the linkage including the arm. They will bend or crack changing the profile and the lock piston does not go fully into the detent position. It is a relativly easy and inexpensive fix. You will need the arm, a gasket(valve housing to transmission) and 6 or 8 o-rings for the stand pipes that route the oil from thevalve to the clutches. lol, Bob

Bob, When referring to a Quad range or a Syncrorange transmission, your suggestion would be absolutely right but a Power shift is different as it does not have the cast aluminum arm or lock engaging piston that you referred to. I would say I have to agree that I have seen this problem on the 30 series and newer non power shift transmissions allot and you are correct when refering to those. Dave W.

JB, Now that we are talking about a 4230 Power shift, remove the square floor plate that the dimmer switch comes through. Locate the PTO lever control rod coming down from the PTO lever and follow it down to the top of the clutch housing where it is connected to a short control arm. Good chance you will find allot of dirt built up on top of the clutch housing that is limiting the control arm from traveling clear down which is the ON position of the PTO lever. Dirt will be packed in this area and will need to be scratched loose and removed from this area. After getting this area cleaned up check the control arm for being tight on the control shaft. This arm has two flats that key it to the control shaft that it turns and is prone to work loose on the control shaft wearing the arm and sometimes even the shaft. The arm is held on the control shaft by 1/4" flange nut. This nut will work loose and cause the arm to become loose on the shaft and wear. The wear and lost motion results in partial engagement of the PTO control valve. See what you learn and let us know what you find. Good Luck Dave W.

JB, is your tractor a synchro-range or a powershift? They used different systems depending on the transmission type. Repost and I'll pull the service manual and see if I can give you some pointers, if no one else responds before I get back to the shop.

Right off the top of my head, I would look for a problem in the PTO/cluctch valve. There is a mechanism in there to use oil pressure to keep the PTO lever engaged - it sometimes gives problems. Get a service manual, as the procedure for removing and repairing that can be a little involved.
