Need some background info on 3010 Diesel

The local Case IH Dealer has a 3010 Diesel in the used inventory. He is asking 3700 for it. I live near Dallas. I don't know too much about 3010s. It looks pretty good and has a wfe and good tires, but it needs a clutch. I would like to buy it to add a loader and maybe pull a 15 foot flex wing shredder. What will the clutch cost if I take it to an idependent mechanic (Case IH says 1200 - 1500, but I figure an independent is cheaper). Is the 3010 worth having? Why do the 3020s bring more money? Thanks in advance.

Hey John,
Your going to be right in the range for the clutch job but I doubt seriously if you can get it done for under a 1000.00 as the previous post mentioned. As far as handling a 15' batwing, depending on your mowing habits and what you are cutting I don't see any reason why it would not do you a pretty good job. Yea hills and gulleys and such will make you wish you had more hoss. I just recently got a 1508 Deere batwing and tried it with my 3020 and it did fine but I was only mowing broom weeds too though. I have yet to get into a real mowing job. I plan on pulling it with a 4230. One thing on the 3010 you might want to consider is the pto, it does have a pin inside the trans. that can shear and from what I've been told its an 8 hour job to replace a 2.00 pin. The 3010 and 4010 were only made for 3 years so that will tell ya that improvements were quick to come, hey just 4 years prior to the 3020 and 4020 they were still making 2 cylinders. There had to be a learning curve there. I in no way am saying any of this to put down the 3010, in fact I wouldn't mind having one around myself in the future, good back up and hay moving tractor. I currently run a 4430, 4230, 3020, and a 135 Massey so I'm in no major hurry for another.

$1200 sounds about right for a dealer to replace the clutch. You can probably find an independent to replace it for under $1000. Its not a tough job to do it yourself. I've done it many many times on the 4010's and 4020's that we've had on the farm. A 15' cutter is pushing it for a 3010 unless you are on level ground and just clipping pastures. A 4010-4020 is the ideal tractor for that size mower. If its in good condition $3700 is a fair price. Here in Central NC fair 3010's are bringing $4500-$5000 at auctions. It would help if you could contact the previous owner of the tractor and talk to him about it. The 3020's bring more because they are newer, have a few more HP, and they have several improvements over the 3010.
