I have painted 2 JD's using Sherwin willams Ultra fill primer it helps fill the pits in the old metal, sands well and stays on even when the carb drips and the color coat comes of the primer is still on and well bonded to the metal.I get mine at the car quest auto parts store.

Good luck

Abe, I suggest using the John Deere Primer, I know its a little more expensive than others but it has always worked good for me. One time I used some stuff from an Auto part store and the first coat of paint bubbled up on me, OUCH, so from then on I always used JD primer. I guess there was some kind of chemical reaction, ever happen to anyone else.
