Clooney,

My generator/regulator seems to be charging my eight volt battery good. I continue to have good swift cranking amps. I will continue to monitor. Thanks for all of your help.

Dick

Dick, you probably won't see any trouble show up until cold weather. This time of year with a new battery you can run for weeks without even a generator as long as you don't use excess power for lights or numerous starting. New batteries have good reserve capacity & good recovery. ~You are charging at 8.2 volts & that will run all the ignition & even the lights & still charge the battery some. ~A fully charged 8 volt battery should be right around 8.4 volts & you are only charging at 8.2 volts so that is probably around 75% of full charge (the state of non-loaded charge isn't proportional to the actual full charge voltage). A 75% charged battery will start you without much problem in good weather as long as the cranking times aren't too long. The 75% charge will start to show when the battery gets cold & it's cold starting capacity is lower due to temp, the engine cranks harder due to the cold oil & the tractor is run with the lights on. The lower charging voltage will really start to effect you when the battery gets older & sulfated & the cranking capacity becomes lower.
~The other thing you might notice is the battery probably won't store as long without discharging due to it being not fully charged at the beginning of storage.
~On the good side, your system is designed to crank on 6 volts (actually a little lower) & the coil is designed to supply good spark during cranking at around 4-5 volts so as long as the 8 volt battery is charged enough to crank the engine you should have better than stock coil output & that is a big help in the starting department.
~Let me know how that system holds up in the dark & cold of next winter.
