Never-sieze or grease

I've noticed a couple of recent posts saying to put a bit of never-sieze on a part during assembly. And other times/other situations recommending grease. Any rules of thumb (or good ol' experience) that can help me understand when or where to use either grease or never-sieze?

I use the heck out of it, and it has yet to bite me in the butt.I hate drilling out twisted off bolts/studs. My two pennies.Good Luck Ben

recently bursted a center on a 520 by overtightening. Had some lubricant, could have been never seize, however I had changed a wedge and the wedges were not matching flush when tightend. For those who don't know the wedges have a back surface that is grindable for a flush fit when tightened. If both wedges are not fully flush when tightend you will have trouble with wheel creep. Probably never seize should not be used on these surfaces. I prefer regular lubricant. A John Deere mechanic friend of mine said they used wax paper between the wedges and center, this way they could get them loose. CORRECTED LAST POST

One place to always yse "never Seize" is on the Spark Plug threads...!!! Why do Champion spark plugs seize so BAD.???? Religiously use it on the S P Threads.!!!

I'm a firm believer in never-sieze also. I will be putting on the hyd. lines on my 520 when they go back in. One word of caution back when I was working for a dealer we used to put it on the wheel wedges, then at a service school we were told not to use it on wheel wedges because it lubricates the wedge enough to alow over tightening that will split that big center casting on rear wheels. I still use it on the axel side of the wedges but not on the outer taper. Deere said don't use it at all.

Boy, I bet Poorerbut wishes he knew that. He broke a center after applying Nev-r-Seez, and suspected that it was becasue the surfaces were too slick and let the taper slide in too far.

Now we all know !

A F.I.T. said, grease is for internal enclosed lubricated parts that move agaist each other. For items exposed to atmosphere & only move when being assembled or disassembled, anti-sieze should be applied to almost all threaded fasteners or wedge/clamping surfaces. Use the stuff by the jug in the nuclear industry. It is not a lubricant however, it just prevents seizing.

I cant say enough good things about "never-sieze" or what ever the name is of the stuff Deere sells. It is a must on wheel lugs espically considering that our fleet of 14 hay wagons(of which 12 are deere) have occasional flats that have to be changed who knows where with just a 4way. It sure beats fighting rusty threads the next time around. I use the stuff religiously on anything that I think might ever rust. The only drawbacks are that 1)deere wants way too much for a little can-I think I paid like $9.45 for my last can of it-2)it will never come off of your hands 3)and its even harder to get off of metal that you want to prime for painting. But, if its something that you use or think you may ever use or repair again, dont chance it use never seeze. By the way, I second what Frank said about the grease. I just want to express the fact that i'm a believer in the stuff.

I like Nev-R Seez (which is supposed to be silicon grease and powdered graphite) if I think the part might get hot or wet. Wet can wash the grease out, and hot will melt it out. The silicon lube resists water and it has a higher temperature tolerance, and if it does melt, you have powered graphite left behind.

That's my strategy.

But if it's a place that needs lubed until engine oil can replace it, I use grease from a new, clean tube.

Anb I always use wheel bearing grade grease on wheel bearings that only get packed.

There are various grades of anti-sieze available with the most common having a copper compound. There is also one available with Nickel in it for very high temperature applications (>1000F) but also more expensive. You can get them at any industrial supply house or auto parts store for less $ than at a dealership. John
