Any one have any tips to help clear up black smoke? It will pull 54 hp on dyno.Have checked air cleaner, timing, and rack settings. Also checked injectors on a tester.Starts good and runs good.Pulled 4-14's in 5yr old sod in 2nd gear in yellow clay hills just fine.

Just pulling the cup off the aircleaner bottom doesn't show the state of the internal mesh. Pulling the aircleaner body, drilling out the spot welds & sliding the mesh out will expose several pounds of oily dirt plugging airflow. Either boil the dirt out or replace with a dry filter element.

Its normal to smoke black in a diesel, dont worry about it, all diesels smoke black.

Most diesels will put out from a light haze of smoke to being able to work in the shade. This rates as a heavy black cloud.

Kal:

When you had the injectors tested, thay had a good pattern, and snapped off with out any drips, right ?

Does it smoke more than normal with out a load, like at fast idle ?

If it smokes only under load, did it smoke like that on the dyno ?

If it did on the dyno, what happened if you come back on the throttle just a little ? Thinking that at wide open it still might be getting a bit far on the rack.

Have you taken the air cleaner cup off to see how it acts then...you might have lready mentioned that, but I forgot. Lack of air = black smoke.

I know you know, that pump timing has got to be right on.

I'm reachin' here...

well, i didnt know it was that bad, check your fuel filter, if equiped with one, this is the cause of heavy black smoke.

Has a light haze at high idle with no load.Has new fuel filters.Injectors sprayed good and did not drip.Did not unhook air cleaner when running, but had it apart to check it.I have pulled wrenches for 30 years but not on Deeres. This has me baffled.

Kal:

If the timing is right, and the rack setting on the wide open end is good, then an air restriction is about the only other cause of too rich, right ?

Fuel tranfer pump pressure maybe ? Don't see how, since lack of transfer pump pressure would make for less fuel.

You say you had the injectors checked...what about the pumps ? Were they ever apart ? Maybe the indexing of them to the rack is off....boy, that's really a stretch though...
