Just bought 4020 at a sale. Haven't driven a power shift before. Does not seem to shift well 6 to 7 or 7 to 8th. Sluggish with a 3 to 5 second delay. Is this normal? If not any suggestion as to what might be causing the problem? Also what does the lever off the right side of the dash (opposite of PTO lever) do? Thanks for your help!

Rick, save your time and cleaning of the 4 5gal buckets. Get a shop vac and tape the hose to the filler neck. The vacuum provided by it is easily able to hold the oil up in the tranny case while you look at the sump screen.

This will work provided there aren't any other large holes in the tranny when you pull the screen out.

It's normal for the engine to bog when going into 7th gear, 7th gear is direct drive and to put it simple you have about 500 lbs of transmission that suddenly has to turn engine speed so it takes power. Just remember to shift before the engine pulls down and it will be smother, 3rd 5th and 7th gears all do this to a certain extent. John deere demonstrated this transmission in 1964 at the airport in Waterloo, Ia. and the guys were shifting from 8th gear forward to reverse and wore two sets of tires out on the rear and didn't hurt the tranny. The reason is the oil pressure engaged slow enough to take the slack out before becoming fulley engaged. You wont hurt this trans but you better be hanging on ! Don

The tranny is normal, all ps trannys did this.
I think in seventh a shaft actually reverses
itself making the shift pull the tractor down
for an instant. It should recover and be fine
in seventh once the shift is made.My 4440
with PS even does this.

7th is direct right through the transmission without gearing up or down. If I remember correctly it takes the longest to shift into 7th & it demands the most oil since all clutch packs must change state from 6th to 7th. Some owners have traded PS tractors thinking 7th is wearing out but its normal to lag a wee bit. As previously mentioned the proper clean oil, filters & intake screen is vital. Check the front pump isn't destroked a little from someone tinkering with the cold start de-stroke adjustment.

The lever on the right side? Are you sure it's not on the left? If so, it disengages the hydraulics to make the tractor easier to start. To reengage, pull it back and push in the button on the panel just above the light switch. Also, when you change the hydraulic fluid, make sure the screen in the bottom (left side, about even with the front of the drawbar) is clean.

The lever on the right , looking forward , is the PTO lever , the left side is the trans disconnect lever for cold weather starting . Slow shifting can also be caused by low trans pressure , what does your gauge show ? The other things mentioned already count too . Pre 1969 tractors had the shift speed adjustment too , that was mentioned . Keeping the pressure on the high side and shifting fast will jerk some sometimes but will slip less , slipping is what ruins lots of transmissions .
There is a big jump in speed between 6th & 7th and 7th & 8th , you have to have everything set up right to have good shifts especially when tractor is not warmed up good . A good supply of CLEAN oil is very important .

Pressure reads well above the minimum at specified RPM, alomst full scale. I'll change fillters and see what I find i.e silver paste as mentioned in another post ect. Thanks!

If it is a 4020 with the hydraulic levers on the dash, then the lever on the right is the PTO lever. The little lever on the left side is to disengage the transmission to make the tractor spin over faster while starting in cold weather. If you ever use it, engage that lever immediately after starting.

If the tractor shifts poorly then the first thing to do is to change the transmission and hydraulic filters. If the trans oil looks bad then it should be changed too. Too many owners think that the trans oil never need changing and it is often neglected. On the early style of 4020 tractors there is also a shift adjustment on the clutch valve. I will have to check a manual to give you more info.

The trans oil looks clean. I'll have to check the filters. Wouldn't I need to drain the oil to change the filters? Thanks for your response.

You shouldn't have to drain the oil to change the filters if the check valves works.
If you check the screen in the trans case you'll need 4 five gallon buckets before you pull the plug.
If you find silver paste in the filterhousings that might be what's messing up the shifting,if that stuff has gotten in the shift valve good luck.Comes from worn brake discs, not that uncommon on older tractors, but if it gets circulated through the whole system it's a pain to clean up.
