I HAVE BEEN HAVING TROUBLE SHIFTING AND ALWAYS HAVE TO "PLAY" WITH THE STICK TO GET IT INTO GEARS. WHEN I WENT IN TO THE RIGHT OR HIGHER GEAR RANGE THE SHIFTER GOT STUCK AND THEN AFTER TURNING IT AROUND IT WOULD MOVE BUT NOT CHANGE ANY GEARS. ANYWAY I GOT IT BACK TO WORKING BUT I TOOK OFF THE SHIFTING STICK AND FOUND IT HAD BEEN WELDED ABOVE THE 2ND ball. AT THIS POINT IT IS BENT SO THE SHIFTER IS NOT STRAIGHT. B4 I HEATED IT UP TO STRAIGHTEN IT DOES ANY ONE KNOW IF IT IS SUPPOSE TO BE STRAIGHT OR HAVE A SLIGHT BEND TO IT??? ANY OTHER THINGS I SHOULD LOOK FOR? THANKS

replace the stick, just asking for trouble if you heat you old one.
check the balls and springs in the detent shafts. you have to take the side covers off to replace these.

The shift lever should be straight.Maybe you should get a new Fulcrum ball also.

I would'nt try to straighten your lever. I would try to find one at a salvage yard. That's my two-cents

The stick on my 720 is straight, and all I have ever seen were. I had problems with my tractor not wanting to go into 4th and 6th gear, then not wanting to come out of others. After removing the shifting cover I figured out the shifter locks and pawls were worn which alowed it to lock into gear, the the stick was worn enough it wouldn't release the lock to come bacl out without a little persuasion. All of the parts are still available from JD at a decent price, but you have to pull the timing gear cover off the feft side to get the shifter shafts out. Hopefully straightening the stick will fix your problem.
