As some may know. I'm as green as it gets. (and I don't mean JD green) I bought a 1952 JD 60 Veg. Serial # 6001191. I didn't even know how to start it after the sale. I had to muster up the nerve to ask a passer-by to show me how. THAT was embarassing. Oh well, at least I can start it now. I have some questions. 1. Is there any way to trace some of the history of this tractor?
2. It also has 2 odd looking things on it. a. It looks like a power steering unit on the top of the hood where the steering wheel attaches to the column. Is it an original part of the tractor? b. What looks like a funky hitch, I think is a part of the "veg." attachment. It also has 2 hydraulic cylinders. One on each side of this funky hitch-like-thing and are coupled to the Hydraulic ports on the powertrol. Is this original? Is it worth anything? Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

I was there today, wish I had got there earlier in the week and wallowed in the mud more seeing everything they sold there, there was a LOT! That fairgrounds looks like the home of 5000 Chester Whites. Lots of people, the usual on prices I thought, good stuff brought good money, there were some bargains though, and junk didn't get much except the usual exceptions. Lot of JD's there, some nice G types and 60's and 70's and 730D's and 830's. Alot of B's but not so many A's. To me, it looked like the stuff might be getting a little cheaper generally but certain models of all makes are getting "precious type" prices. An "expo" AOS brought $21,000, nice tractor, but I have seen better, Couple G types brought 7000, but so did Farmall Super MTA types. Poor red guys are finding out some of their tractors are going out of sight too.

Eric I saw your tractor today at the auction and you got a very nice one. The steering you have is a Behlen aftermarket type. Your tractor didn't have power steering offered from the factory at the time it was made. The attachments on the back look to be some sort of cultivator hook ups from what I saw. I have a 1953 Model 60 I have been restoring and I love it as I am sure you will yours. Good luck Mark

Your next purchase should be a parts catalog like the john deere dealer has. this will come in handy when looking for parts for repair, and a john deere shop manual for the "60" (not a I.T. brand, but a shop manual like you get at the john deere dealer) I think they may be available here at this site, click on "manuals" above. The "60" parts catalog is valuable as it will show you what other john deere tractors share the same parts as your 60 when you have to go scavenging for those parts that you will eventually need. It will also show you what options were available on the 60 and what years. I found a primer switch in my catalog that is located on the dash and i couldn't figure what in the world a primer switch would be for until i remembered the the 50, 60, and 70 were available with LP fuel and that switch was for priming the LP system (i'm guessing) i also learned that the origional decals were water transfer (i suspected until i saw it in the parts catalog) enjoy the tractor and enjoy learning...

Highgrove I can't give a number of tractors sold but they sold solidly from 10 a.m. until about 5 p.m. I thought the prices were average overall. The one tractor that sticks in my mind was an AOS John Deere that brought over $20,000. That of course was the exception as it was a cherry restoration of a very rare tractor. There were lots of A's, B's, and G John Deere's as well as the M and H Farmalls. Nothing all that rare though. The 20 and 10 series New Generation tractors brought good money. A 1972 4020 w/side console brought just under $14,000 in excellent restored condition. There was a very good crowd through most of the day considering the VERY muddy conditions of the fairgrounds after yesterday's thunderstorm that went through. If I had sold a tractor there today I don't think there would have been any disappoint in anything that I saw go through. Mark
