Hi everyone,
I have a chance to buy a 49 A JD. I need imput on a price and what if anything I have to look out for. It has a narrow front and is in average condition, except for the tires.

Thanks,
Matthew in SD

Your post is way too vague for anyone to give you a good answer. Is the front a rollomatic, tricycle or single wheel? Is the tin work just rusty or all beat up? Has any work been done to it? Is it complete? What rear wheels are on it, cast or tin?
Does it start and run? How well? I'm just trying to give you an idea of the kinds of things people need to know to give you a more accurate estimate. And even with this info, the estimates could vary greatly. Average condition can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Are the tires in good shape or bad? What brand and size are they? Just my 2 cents.

Hi GMan,
If my post is too vague it is because I don't know too much about it. I haven't even seen it yet. All I can tell you is that it hasn't been restored, tin rusted and the tires are probably shot. The guy that owned it died over a year ago. He was very mechanically minded, he took care of it I'm sure. It was just a working tractor. I would like a ball-park figure for something like this, I don't need to know the exact value. I'm thinking $1000-$1250 or so, If I way off the reservation, please let me know.

I don't know much about Deere, anything you can tell me about this model I would appreciate.

I would say that if it's in decent shape and could be restored fairly easily - not needing a lot of parts, repairs etc and the tin work and tires are in good shape, that dollar figure would be a pretty good buy. I've always heard that it doesn't pay to buy an A or B that needs tons of work, because they are plentiful enough that you can usually find a pretty nice one for a reasonable price - unless it's a real rare tractor of course.
I don't know a lot about As, just the basics. I would suggest going to the links on this page and see what you can find - I know there are several sites that people have devoted exclusively to As. I think Rummys page would be a good source of info too. If you buy the tractor, get yourself a parts manual, owners manual and possibly a service manual - an I&T book will do fine for service. You will gain more knowledge about your tractor from these than anywhere else. Good luck and I'm sorry if I sounded a little grumpy in my first post - it wasn't intended.

Thanks G-MAN,
I'll keep looking around. I've been searching the archives on this page and I'm learning alot. From the sounds of things, the carbs and crank end-play are the most problematic.

Happy Easter!

I have a 1949 model A with wide front end and 42" rear tires. One problem I have had with it is that the carb tends to freeze up when the temp is below 32F. It starts easily and runs well otherwise but it will not pull or slow race very well because of the 42" rear tires. All in all the A is a very reliable tractor. Let me know if you need more info.
