I am getting ready to put a new set of rings in my R. The top compression ring gap is worn. Can I put a spacer ring in to take up the slack? Were can I get one? I was also told by someone to just leave the top ring off. What do you think??

Albert, I don't have much experience with the R piston ring groove wear, in the old days new pistons were relatively cheap & were installed when any wear was evident.
~I am experienced with top ring grove wear in other Deere pistons though. Usually when the ring groove wears wider (I presume you are talking about side gap)the piston groove doesn't wear flat but wears in a taper being a little wider at the outer diameter of the ring groove than the bottom of the groove. I usually chuck the pistons in a lathe & cut the worn ring groove wider until it is straight & has no taper to the groove sides.
~I usually just install a wider ring then cut the piston ring groove to fit the new ring, but have used the old ring & put in on the surface grinder to thin it down to make a spacer for the new ring. I have good success with this on gas tractors but have never done it on a Diesel so can't comment on the durability for diesel service.
~Some of the ring manufactures used to sell ring spacers for just what you are going through, but the only ones I remember seeing were for gas engines. ~I have just recently lost my supplier of wider rings due to the place going out of business & haven't found a new place yet, but just the other day a fellow on this board gave us a new place to try (I'm sorry I don't remember who or I would give him credit for this find)..... . http://www.dol.net/~dave.reed/ringcost.htm ..... I haven't tried this new place yet & if you do please post your experience.
~Maybe someone that has used wider rings or spacers in a Diesel will post & give you better or actual experience advice.

Hastings offers a .030 spacer for pistons up to 6.25 diameter. I found this out because I needed some for a D. Unfortunatly they do not have them in 6.750 diameter. Otto's will make a ring to your specs but they are a bit pricy. A ring for a D .030 wider was $35.00 + shipping.
