I'd like to hoist these cast centers off the tractor when the time comes to clean and sandblast. Was wondering how much they wiegh ? I have a 3000# engine hoist, and a boom for my 855 (but I've only ever lifted a small block V-8 with that).

Thanks,

Do you have a 3 pt. boom on your 855? I guess I was assuming you were going to use a loader. I think I would still go with the cherry picker. A 3000 lb hoist should be able to handle 270 lbs even extended all the way out. If you're doing this alone, I would think the hoist would be much easier than the tractor.

Frank, I can't give you the actual weight of those (F-1500 R) centers, but can tell you from experience they are "heavy suckers". ~The cast centers on the un-styled A weigh in at just slightly under 300# so I'm sure you are looking at that much or more.
~Your engine hoist should lift them ok as long as you get the hoist bottom arms well under the wheel centers.
~I don't know about the boom on your 855, it depends on the boom length & angle. The lift boom I have won't lift those centers using my 755, but the 3 point with a tool bar will lift one side to get it up enough to get my ceiling crane hooked to it.
~The way I usually move those centers is with the rim & tire on it & just roll them to where I need them, or I have a dolly I made to slide them on & off the axle but that thing is dangerous if the tire/wheel starts to tip on you. The best way I have found is with a round bale spike that I have shortened & use it on one of the bigger tractors. ~I usually lay those centers down on a 4 wheel cart to either blast or power wire brush them as that allows movement in & out of the shop with little effort & it is much easier to work on them if they are flat. ~I have a large 12' long pipe that I run through the centers & place on stands on each end to hold the wheels during painting as that allows the wheels to be spun so all sides can be painted at one time & as you will see spinning will also stop a run that is apt to happen with that new no-lead, thin, non-covering, yellow Deere paint.

I would use the engine hoist, not the 855. The 855 would handle them, I think. But you'll have more control with the engine hoist. I would imagine those wheel centers to weigh somewhere in the neighborhood of 400 to 500 lbs, but I could be wrong, they might even be a little lighter.

Hey Frank, did you know that that's the same part # for the cast center wheel on my "50"? My right wheel center is cracked straight across the center,3 ft. It was that way when i got it. Any way, if the wheel was designed to be stout enough for the weight and power of the 70, how did it get cracked on my 50. the man i bought it from said it was that way when he got it. I'd like to meet the man who owned it when it got cracked. Anyway i wanted to know how much it weighed so i could use my pickup to haul one home (if it didn't weigh to much) I should be able to handle 266 lbs. I'm Glad you asked that question.....

Walt:

That's interesting ! I checked my CD-ROM and it shows that F 1500 R was used on all 38" applications from the 50 to the 730. I thought the 50 had those oval shaped holed wheels. Maybe that was the early ones. With all those tractor models using them, you shouldn't have any trouble finding one !

I'm told that those centers can be cracked with misuse of heat when trying to break them loose. I think Pooerbut had one break just from tightening it up ! I guess it's like any casting, if it gets in a bind it can and will crack.

Now I have to get mine loosened up.

I really thought they were heavier than that.

Frank, you "will" think they are heavier than that when you try to work with them. No matter how you work with them they are always top heavy....

Clooney:

Oh, I know they're awkward and unwieldy. I handled the ones from our 4020 with 34" centers, and also from a 4440 I restored after a cab fire in '82. It had both rack bolts broken. Those wheels were big and scary, and it was just me with no help.

I just started to free up the left side, but it doesn't look good. Rack bolt is fast, jack bolts don't seem to be moving the wedge, and one of the three inner bolts has a near rounded off head. I thought that if the inner bolts were loosened by a turn or so it might let everything else give a bit. So it's soaking right now. It's weeks before I'll need them to move, so I though I'd start early. I wish I had a bigger impact wrench, because I think the tapping effect might help shake things loose.

I can only blame myself, though, because I was the last one to move those wheels in 1971 when we mounted the 227 picker on it, and I guess I didn't put enough grease in the area !
