Thanks Clooney for yours and many other guys out there on my 8 volt charging requirement. A man that owns a auto electric shop near me took my generator and checked it out thoroughly. The field coils were bad and the regulator was bad. He went completely through the generator and rebuilt it. Installed a new regulator and set it to charge at 8.2 volts. He told me that if I try to go higher than that, it will burn out the field coils in a short time. This man has been around for a long time and claims to have worked on many many two cylinder John Deere's in his life time. He has been doing auto electric work all of his life.

Thanks again Clooney and all the other great guys out there.

Dick

Thanks John T & Clooney

I have printed both your suggestions along with the first adjustment procedure explained by Clooney last week and am going to suggest that my generator man consider these higher adjustments.

Thank you very much for your support

Dick

Dick, before doing much else or making a big deal out of it, put a voltmeter across the battery posts while the generator is charging & see what the charging voltage actually is. It might be higher than you think. If it is around 9-9.2 volts maybe he told you the wrong voltage he set it to.

Popper, Like clooney I have used stock 6 volt generators with 12 volt regulators (for 12 v conversions) for years and vice versa and never had one go bad. A generator doesnt know what voltage its supposed to be, its increased by turning it faster or increasing field current. I wouild think your regulatir nedds to be set more like 9 volts to give you a sufficient charge. Ol John T

Dick, are you sure about that 8.2 volts? Time will tell, but 8.2 volts is a little low to keep an 8 volt battery up.
~I'm not sure I buy the field coil damage idea, I have run a 6 volt generator at 12 (actually 13.5+) for many years without any damage.
~I guess at least your headlights will last for a while at that lower setting. Let me know if that 8.2 setting will keep your battery up in cold weather with the lights on?

Clooney

I just took her for a maiden trip for about two miles. She ran great. I measured the charging voltage at the battery with two different digital volt meters I have. They both read 8.2 volts at WOT and 8.0 volts at about third throtle. I forgot to check for any charging variations with the light switch on. Next time I fire her up, I'll check that. I am going to talk to my friend (the employee of Autolectric) about higher charging voltages. I'll see him tonight)

The motor now has about 45 minutes on her. Breaking her in now with JD breakin oil.

Thanks again for all of your help.

Dick
