I am ready to reinstall the rear seal on the pump shaft. The seal has been substituted with 2 separate seals and a spacer bushing/washer.

My question is the correct orientation of the seals.

My feeling is that the first seal is pressed in with the open side to the rear using the washer as a driver and then the second seal is pressed in with the open side to the front leaving the washer in the center of the two seals

Any one know for sure. Don

Donwisc, I think you're on the right track. I've got a pump off a 720D with the original double lip seal in it and the lips are facing away from one another. The way you describe putting in the single lip seals (back to back) would leave the same orientation. I've got to admit I don't know what the idea of the spacer-washer is. I've always assumed this orientation would keep the p.s. oil in the pump and out of the engine and the engine oil out of the p.s. pump. Now, if I can only find the snap ring that holds the bearing in place.
