I just got a 4010 and I am havin touble with it starting. The battery keeps going dead and I can't seem to charge it up without blowing up the battery. I was told this tractor has a 24 volt electric system. I thought this would have more power for starting in cold weather. I was also told that if you move the steering wheel back and forth while cranking this would help the engine turn faster. Is it just my tractor or did all these tractors have starting and charging problems? I got a John Deere because I wanted a good tractor, but so far I have been very disappointed. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the help on the starting problem.I didn't realize that the 4010-4020 had these problems with the starting/charging systems. I got it running again today and thought I'd hook up my bush-hog mower, it's a pull type. When I hooked up the hyd cyl. to raise and lower it, the cyl. just kept trying to go up. It would lower alright, but as soon as I let off the handle it would go up again. What's going on with this? TIA.

The hydraulics issue:

Classic case of worn out SCV (selective Control Valve)

These are located infront of the steering columb on these tractors. They are boxes about 3"x5"x5". There are 2 of them and will have levers comming out the sides with rods attached to your control handles in the dash. To access these you must remove the cowling from over the dash. I would let Deere fix them, as they are a royal pain the the you know what to set correctly. Sounds like the high pressure side of the SCV poppet valve is leaking. This can mean, A) the valve is worn out and needs overhaul, B) its not set right anymore, C) The detent springs are shot.

I've built 2 sets, one for my 5010 and another for the dealership and hated both times. Newer style SCV's are a breeze compaired to these guys. (I say this only because setting them up again requires alot of tools, time and hands, they can try your patients alot.)

Good Luck!

Homer, before I spent $400 or more to change over to 12 volt, I believe I would find out what's wrong with the current system. Probably the most common starting problem is one of the batteries holding less of a charge than the other one. When the 'hot' battery gets fully charged, the regulator kicks out and the 'weak' battery doesn't get charged up. You must then charge the weak battery with a charger. To boost the tractor, you do not have to boost both batteries, unless both batteries are down. To either boost or charge, ignore the color of cables and where the other end of cables go. Hook positive to positive and negative to negative (12-volt). If you determine that you do indeed wish to go with a 12-volt system, personally I would wait 'til either the starter or generator failed. That way you recoup much of the price of the change-over. 12-volt is not gonna crank any better. It will probably cause you fewer problems in the future because the 24-volt was not very unforgiving of failing to properly maintain it. There are many, many of these old tractors still using the original system and working just fine.

this tractor you think is 24 volt but it is really not it has what john deere calls there 24 volt split sys. what it is is 1 batt on the right hand side of the trac. is hooked neg ground pos. to starter selinoid and left batt pos ground neg to starter motor one needs to charge at a higher rate but this is not acheived what the prob is is that it takes more enegy to turn the engine the it does to hold the selinoid in well anyways take this whole idea and scrap it go to you deere dealer and ask them for the kit they make for this to be changed to a conventional 12 volt sys they have a whole kit made for it comes with all the needed wires as well as starter and alternator youll never have a prob. agian also get 2 good 12 volt batt. hook them to get 12 volts but this will double there amps and you ll get a better cranking speed

In the 1960s it was a good system, better then a pony engine to tune over a fairly large engine on a cold morhing.Used on 10 series and early 4020 seiries. When it worked good it was alright.Lot of mechanics had trouble trouble shooting it.Starts on 24 volt ,charges 12 volt.Soon Deere had to keep up and build something that was less troublesome. If you jump it you must jump both batteries because one battery is positive ground the other is negative ground. If you cant figure it out and must pay someone to fix it and it cost more then 3 or 4 hundreds dollars to fix,or IF THE STARTOR NEEDS to be replaced then change it to 12 volt,YOU most likely can be talked thru the change over. Also when you charge batteries you must charge both batteries look for positive marked terminal on both batteries,Battery ends on cables must be very good,NO,OOOOO OOOOO two dollar ends on THEM..... .. Use small amp chargers both at the same time for at least 5 or 6 hours.Hope this helped, [email protected]

Try charging the other battery instead, if you are putting the charger on the battery, and it is cooking, then that is not where the problem is, try hooking the charger to the other battery, I bet it pops right off. These 24 volt sytems are a pain to mess with, one little glitch in the wiring system, it charges on battery, but drains the other one. I have had good success with just converting the system over to 12 volts, change to an alternator, and a few wires and your ready.
Good Luck

Does JD make a coversion kit to 12 volt? If so what does it cost? I really don't want to spend alot more money on this tractor since I paid a premium for it.

Homer, I bought My 12 v conversion kit from deere for $400 came with starter, alternater and wiring.

The similar kit sells throiugh Abilene Machine for about the same money. Do a search for ABILENE MACHINE they have all kinds of parts for the 4020.

You might also want to check with Shoup Manufacturing co.

I am not sure if they do or not, I think I may have heard that they do. The late 4020s were 12 volt Just buy a single wire alternator, mount it, you have to put on a 12 volt starter, or have that one rebuilt to 12 volt, and put in a key switch, should already be there, and a push button starter switch, and redo the wires for your lights, and you off and running

Dont forget to hook the 2 12 volt batteries up in parrell circuits, rather than the series they are in now.

In '69 when Deere made the change to 12 V start and side console... They used (2) 6V batteries. 'Course, either one works.

Homer, John Deere in my opinion has built some of the best tractors in history but the 24 volt system is not their stongest point. Most 4010's were 24 volt and the later 4020s that replaced them went to 12 volt. What most people do is change the tractor over to 12 volt to eliminate their electrical nightmares. You'll need a 12 volt starter (perferably nipendenza), a altenator and new batteries.
