Have got the ole girl running and have had the carb overhauled with new float, jets, strainer, etc. etc, however the fuel economy sucks! the jets are set to: load needle around 3/4 turn out and fuel mix about 1 to 1 1/2 turn out. I put 5 gal of gas in and it doesn't take no time for it to run out. No leaks from carb or anything like that. I just start it and run it around the yard no heavy work for the ole girl, and it seems like that she it out of fuel and have to put gas back in. What sort of fuel economy should I expect on this 1941 early Styled B? Comments would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your imput.Have new plugs, wires, mag cap. points etc. Dan 41B

Had the same problem with my H. After a carb overhaul the most amazing change was from champion plugs to autolites. With the autolite plugs I was able to lean out the carb settings and the fuel consumption went way down. I was stopping the tractor and looking in the tank as I could not beleive it was going that long on one tank of gas. Some say that there must be something else wrong if the champions won't work, but for the price of some plugs, I'm happy.

I have a 52 model A that I cultivate corn with. I run 4 row cultivators with 3 shanks between each row. My tractor averages 4 gallons of gas per hour somtimes closer to 5 on hills and in heavy soil. I run in 3rd gear from 3/4 to full throttle. I use a timing light to set the ignition and if I lean the carb. any more it will fall on its face. I have cultivated 200 to 400 acers of corn for the last 10 years with this rig, its fun to use but thirsty.

Dan, there are some good comments below to start you off.
~In addition, make sure the running timing is where it belongs (late timing will really lower the fuel economy)
~There is a better than average chance the air cleaner is plugged or at least partially plugged so that should be looked at (difficult to do as the air cleaner is sealed, it will come apart with some work & drilling)
~Make sure you put the correct main jet (nozzle) in the carb, if you installed the wrong one, your economy could be severely effected. If you think that might be your problem, E-Mail me for a nozzle chart to match your nozzle with for identification.
~Make sure the throttle linkage from the carb to the governor is adjusted correctly, if it isn't & the governor is real active your economy could effected.
~Make sure the carb on your B is the correct number, if someone installed a larger carb your economy could be effected.
~There are other things that can effect the fuel economy but these are the worst offenders.
~Any questions or clarification on the above just repost or E-Mail..... .....

Let's see-- fuel economy....

How does 14 1/2 HOURS on a 1 row tree planter, and 7 gallons of gas--ofcourse that was with a 1952 "B".... OR... from 6:AM to Noon on a 2-14" pull type plow non-stop...for 12 gallons of Gas... When you get it rite, they are the cheapest there ever was to use..!!! Remember...they ONLY RUN HALF the time..!!!!!

Settings sound right. I can put in 5 gal of gas and drive around non stop for about 2 hours working (Cornbinding) with my 43B. Same engine as you. Bone stock except for 45 over JD cast iron pistons. See if you can lean out the settings and still run right. Hope someone can help more.

Just set it so it "takes Gas", when you give it a slug of throttle, after it is WARM... That means you will have to use the choke, when it is not warmed up... Don't set it any richer than it absolutely needs to be...The idle jet should be set at BEST idle...the Power at just rich enough to " Take Gas", Warm..... Any richer, and you will be fouling plugs too often... The exhaust should almost be clean, or Grey..
