Gauge had worked fine. Serviced tractor, & ever since then it does not work all the time. If it is not working, I can shut engine off & restart and it might work just fine for a while. It might then work all day, or the next time you look at it, it might not be working again. I think it is an electronic unit, but not for sure. Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance!

First of all, check the connection between the sender and the harness. Those weatherpack connectors can get brittle, it's not uncommon for the little clips to break off and cause a bad connection. You might have bumped the wiring in the process of changing the oil filter, etc. Also check the harness around the engine, that split loom covering over the wires also gets hard and brittle and can break off, letting the wiring rub and short out. That is where I would start, the gauges in JD tractors usually don't give much problem - much more likely to be a wiring or sensor problem.

I had A similar problem a couple years ago it's kind of scary when oil pressure disappears. What I did to diagnose this was first I removed the oil pressure sending unit that is mounted on the engine just below the fuel filters and installed a pressure gauge to determine actual oil pressure available, The pressure was ok so I replaced the sending unit now everything is ok.

I would say that if it didn't have sufficient oil pressure, it wouldn't have run this long. It is not a bad idea to use a mechanical gauge to check the pressure, though. I still think you're going to find a bare wire or bad connection somewhere. If the gauge registers pressure sometimes and not at others, it pretty much eliminates an internal problem in the engine, unless your pressure relief valve was intermittently sticking open. If you lost oil pressure for even 5 seconds, that engine would be hammering very badly.

Thanks, guys, for the advice. I found a rusty connection on sending unit.
