40T 430W Rockshaft

My father and I have a 40T and 430W and both of them pour fluid at the rockshaft. Both are dual touch-o-matics. We have put new seals in the 430 several times in the 25 years we have owned the tractor. The lift works great it just leaks and makes a terrible mess. The 40 is a recent purchase that we are restoring so I don't really want the mess on a new paint job. I found a post on here from BMeyer about building up the rockshaft and then turning it down before replacing the seals so this afternoon I pulled the hydraulic unit off the tractor and pulled the rockshaft. I see a worn spot on the right hand side but before I build it up I want to be sure I am in the right spot.

Is the wear spot on the right side of the shaft immediately to the left of the position the seal rides on?

When building this up and turning back down do you turn the shaft down all the way out to where the seal rides?

Now for the other leak that both of them have. How hard is it to replace the seal where the control levers attach?

I have the I&T manual and I am not certain but I think I will have to remove the front section to get to the seal. While I am asking twenty questions, can I replace the seal on the load sensing arm with the front section of the unit removed?

Sorry for so many questions at once but I have never done any more to one of these than put rockshaft seals in. I check this board regularly and I am amazed at the wealth of knowledge to be gained from all of you who post here so I am confident some of you can help. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Buidling up that rockshaft where it's worn is something I took to a machine shop. The trick on welding it is not to get it to hot as not to warp the shaft. If I recall correctly, the shaft makes contact in three places with the rockshaft housing. Most that I've seen are worn on the right side as your sitting in the seat and that is the area I had rebuilt. If your shaft is worn, you'll see where it's worn....an area about 1 1/2" wide and on the bottom of the shaft where it makes contact with the housing.

Mine was built up all the way out to where the splines begin and the diameter of the shaft is exactly 2 inches.

You need to check your model of 430W because the later models have a bushing that fits over the rockshaft and it rides between the rockshaft and housing.

Thanks for the reply. I have built up shafts before, however, I have never built up one of these. I have a 350 JD dozer that is always in need of a repair like this on the blade pins. I have a friend who is a retired machinist with a lathe in his shop so we trade machine work for dozer work on his place and we both come out ahead. The spot that is worn on our 40 rockshaft is exactly where you describe it to be. I am going to weld it up this weekend. The building up process will probably take me all weekend. I intend to weld for a few seconds and then work on something else for a while and let the rockshaft cool before coming back with more weld. I appreciate your warning about too much heat and warping the shaft. Most of the stuff on my dozer that I have built up has been short and we turned it down full length after welding. This will be my first attempt at doing a short section on something this long. Thanks again for the reply.
