I would like some information about importing tractors or other farm machinery from Canada. There seems to be some good deals up there with the money exchange rate. What (if any) are the hassles with customs/duty, taxes, titles or other legalities, etc?
Would it be better to use a shipping co. or go get it yourself? Thanks in advance. Casey

Casey,
Just about a year ago I bought a 1935 "D" from Patrick Mossett In Alberta Canada. It was a fair price, It was delivered to my door 800 miles away in Ohio.It was just as it looked in the Pic and there were no surprises except that it was better than I expected. He arranged the transportation door to door for 500 dollars, and that is not bad for almost 6,000 pounds. The scary part was sending a certified check to someone that you don't know. I did, and he was honest and fair. I did talk to him by phone as Cloony said. I also kept in contact by E Mail and looking back I was probably a pest. After arrival I did get a bill from customs for 60 bucks or so, but it was expected, and a small price to pay for the service I got. I would not hesitate to do it again.

I could be wrong, but the last I had heard was that since the foot in mouth scare they were not allowing any farm equipment to be imported into the USA from other countries. This may have excluded Canada. Not sure about that.

casey, i dont remembewr the web site, but look up u.s. comtoms and you can down load the form for importing good from another contry and also get the phone number of the nearest costoms station where you will have to bring the tractor through. i think the form # is 311, not sure, if the tractor was made in the u.s. to start with you use the form for" returning american goods" there is not an import charge on this.
you need to call the costoms to find out where it has to be brought through, because you can not bring it through at every station, only some and this could affect the shipping cost. charles

Casey, the biggest problem is buying a tractor sight unseen. The second biggest problem is shipping.
~There are some tractors coming out of Canada that are being misrepresented & trying to get resolution to a misunderstanding from a different country is difficult at best.
~The shipping is starting to get expensive & you most likely will have to have access to a loading dock to unload on your end. ~There is usually a follow-up fee or entry fee & some other related charges that run $70.00-$100.00+ that will show up after delivery.
~Most will not ship without a pre-pay to their bank account including shipping, so once the money is sent you are at their mercy. ~The good news is, if you get a reputable person to deal with, & receive what's promised, the tractors from Canada are usually not pitted under the paint & usually do clean up good. The castings are usually not pitted & the rust is usually surface type. ~I have bought a few from Canada & have had mixed luck. The last tractor I bought from Canada was a "D" that was misrepresented & I'm working on a resolution to that problem now. I'm giving the person a chance to make things right before I post the name of the person, the name of his business & the particulars of the deal.
~If you do decide to deal without actually seeing the tractor (pictures can easily lie), & meeting the person involved, make sure you spell out EVERY little detail & ask the person doing the selling to personally visually inspect the tractor for any areas of concern you have & references to other buyers would be a very good idea.
~If you deal with a person by E-Mail, keep all the E-Mails sent by you & the seller as a record of what's expected & what's promised so if something goes wrong you can at least back up your side of the deal with names, dates, what's promised & if it comes to the worst you can post all the details to warn other people about dealing with that person or business. A phone call to the seller would also be a good idea as sometimes you can tell more about a person by actually talking to them ..... .
