I am nearing completion on the restoration (I thought) of my Grandfathers 1941 Model L, which has the original Hercules NXB engine and TSX-45 carburetor. The tractor starts easy, runs good and has good power but has and still suffers from running rich, leaving soot on the plugs and exhaust. The exhaust is somewhat black especially at idle.

When I tore the engine down there was a large amount of carbon buildup in the combustion chamber, so much that the head gasket had failed and carbon was forced down the head bolt threads. I tried rebuilding the carburetor myself including replacing the needle/seat, float and gaskets. Still having the same problem I sent the carburetor off to a professional shop. Besides the normal rebuild they replaced the throttle shaft with an oversized shaft and then leak tested it. The magneto is a Wico XH and I have set the timing with a timing light.

I have noticed about 20 seconds after I turn the gas off the black smoke disappears and engine speed increases. I have checked (even lowered) the float level more times than I can count, is this just the nature of the tractor and todays gasoline or what? I live 5,500 ft above sea level could this have anything to do with it?

Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

I once worked on an unstyled "L" carb for a fellow who had one that ran very rich - I resized the main jet with a dab of gasoline-resistant epoxy (re-opening with hot torch-tip cleaners) to the desired size. Runs like a top and does not pour black smoke like it once did.

Mark, I'm not going to be much help to you on the L as I have only worked on a few & that was years ago.
~I can comment on your rich running though.
~Your altitude can & probably is having an effect on your rich running. Deere offered a little higher compression for some high altitude tractors (I don't know if the L was included)
~The first thing I would look at is the air cleaner I don't know about the L but a plugged air cleaner is a big cause of rich running on the other Deere models.
~The other thing is, make sure it is reaching a decent operating temperature (a cold running engine will run rich & carbon easily) ~Deere 2 cylinder engines are made to work & not idle so they do tend to make a little black soot at slow idle & no-load conditions. (make sure you are not trying to idle it too low) ~You still could have a carb problem & there are little air bleeds in the 45 that are very hard to get clean. ~Because of your altitude you can probably run a little higher ignition timing than stock & probably want to set the carb idle needle a little leaner than called for. ~I looked for a service bulletin for high altitude use with the L & couldn't find anything, but that doesn't mean Deere didn't offer a different main jet for the L to be used at altitude.
~You might try calling or E-Mailing the Rideour's ([email protected]) or (513)-988-0586 as they are the experts on the L & would know about any high altitude tricks or how to make your L run a little leaner.

Have you tried adjusting the load screw on the carb? It's running too rich if it clears up when you shut the gas off. A rebuild shop will set the load screw just by guess. The float could have a hole in it making it sink, it could also have a piece of dirt under the needle and seat. all the above will make it run rich and smoke alot.

I don't think these carbs had load screws. Only idle adjust. My LA does the same thing until it is warmed up. I think it is the nature of the engine/carb setup on these. Try a hotter plug and higher octane gasoline. I advanced the timing on mine a little bit, and that seemed to help, but it still does it.
