Why do 4020s and 4320s sell for so much more than 4520s and 4620s. Are 4520s and 4620s lemons?

How are they for loader tractors?
158 loaders look like they would be the perfect fit.

Well start by looking at the PTO. On the smaller 4020 and 4320, there was a 540rpm available. Do you see one on the 4520 and 4620? Next, these are now all "older" tractors and are unlikely to be used for ultra heavy primmary tillage. As a pto equiped tractor to use for baling hay, mowing hay, grinding feed etc, they both make too much horsepower and have the wrong speed pto.

Finally, they were the "Big" tractor, meant for heaviest loads when they were new. Such use puts plenty of wear and stress on parts and components. If I had to choose between a big tractor which used LOTS of fuel or a smaller, more nimble, and more fuel efficient tractor to do lighter chores with, I'd buy the smaller tractor. Anyone NEEDING a tractor 125-135 hp for primary use with the loads suitable for a tractor like that ought to be able to afford a newer, better tractor. I know I'd MUCH rather have a 4440 than a 4520. BTW, the 4240 and 4440 are way more popular on the used market than the 4840 and for the same reasons. JMHO!

Had two 4620s way back when; great tractors. Only problem.....they were a big tractor without a big tractor's horse power. If they would've had 150-160 HP, I believe they would have been much more popular. Not a lot of them sold around here; when the 4630s and the '66-'86 series Internationals came out, farmers traded in the 45s and 46s as quick as they were able. Have owned and driven many tractors; don't know if it was the type mufflers or what; the 4620 engine had a deep, throaty roar; absolutely the best sounding engines I've ever heard.

4520's were dogs in the field, motor wasn't inner and after cooled and had the rotary rosamaster injection pump, 4620's were same tractor as the 4520 only motor was inner and after cool and was changed over to the front mounted Bosch inline injection pump. both were tough as nails tractors. John Deere had a program if you bought a 4620 motor at cost they would replace your 4520 motor free. But I think they sell for less because 4020 and 4320's are more of you smaller framed chore tractors. I have a 72' 4620 and a 72' 4320 side by side lots of differences, esspecially in size. Would like to have a 45 or 4620 esspecially power shift to replace my 4010 on the loader, just because of the stout front axe. Just my dimes worth

Our 4620's had Rosamaster (sic) on them. After the turn of the screw they dyno'd 170 hp. The rear ends did not hold up very well. If you allowed enough slip, the gears held up. They do throw alot of dirt from the fan back in your eyes. The 4620 is very heavy. I put alot of hours on one.

The 4520 and 4620's are big heavy luggers meant for big field and heavy loads like big chisel plows. The 4020's and 4320's are lighter and more nimble not capable of as much hard work but more suited to general farm work. Mowing, baling planting, cultivating etc. Just a more useful tractor.
