I bought a JD 440 crawler (not running) at a recent action. everything is there and it has been all cleaned up and painted. When I first tried to start it I could only get it to fire a few times and it would die. Finally, I checked the compression, and found that I only had 70-80 psi. I pulled the head and discovered that it had brand new over sized pistons. The intake valves where new , but the exaust valves where nearly gone, so I had a new seat and valves put in the head (one seat had already been replaced, and the other seat had a crack in it). I put every thing back together, and I rebuilt the carb, and I still can't start the thing. When I checked the compression again, I only got 80 psi. I am at a loss. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the rings are stuck. Does anyone have any ideas? Please help.

Curt

To help with the diagnisis add a half ounce of lite oil to each cylinder. Crank it to distribute the oil around the cylinder bore then try to start it. Also would be wise to check the piston numbers and make sure they are correct for your engine. A number of years ago I had a 4 cyl Detriot Diesel rebuilt. It was tuff to start and and had no power. Ran better when it was worn out than it did after it was refreshed. After dissecting it was discovered to have the wrong pistons installed giving it poor compression.
