While baleing hay last year the PTO shaft on my 4010 came loose. I retighted the bolts holding it in, but now all it will do is click when engaged with a load. Any suggestions? Is there an easy fix or check?

Craig what you have is a bent pin.About the size of a 20 penny nail.Your pto shaft which exits your tractor under the clutch housing and in the rear has a 540 and 1000 rpm gear on it,each gear has a collar gear on it also. The front 1000 collar gear is spring loaded on to the pto gear,to the rear of the tractor. There is a short little shaft in side your pto shaft between the 1000 colar and the 540 collar The 540 collar is spring loader off its 540 gear.Being this little shaft inside your pto shaft is moving these too collars either in 540 or 1000 pto rpm Each collar has a pin thru it which this little shaft hits on.Remember first 1000 pto collar with pin thru it then short shaft then 540 collar with pin thru it.Then inside the pto shaft another little shaft hits on these which also exits your pto shaft to the rear of your tractor. When you install the 1000 rpm pto shaft there is a hole in it and the spring moves its collar onto the gear and these shafts to the rear of the tractor and into the hole in stub shaft,if the teeth on the gears dont line up the collar will slide on as soon as the pto is turned on,it also slides the 540 collar off its gear. Now when you put your 540 shaft on ,it does not have a hole in it so pushes these shafts, colars and pins to the front of your tractor, which slides the 540 colar on its gear and the 1000 collar off its gear. The only difference is you use the four bolts that holds the shaft on to move these inner shafts to the front of the tractor so if the collar could not slide its gear the pto needs to be turned back and forth just a little so the collar can slide on its gear when tighting the 540 shaft. This is what happened and you bent ,the 540 collar shift pin I would guess about 5 dollars worth of pin. A good Wrench on a clean tractor can install a new one in about 5,6,7,hours.You will need to remove top trans mission cover remove inner and outer trans to clutch housing bolts remove front pto shaft quill, split tractor and install new pin.You can sit on an old five gallon pail when you are installing the new pin in its collar. As far as this pipe plug goes,I have heard talk of it but never seen it done When your in there you should maybe mark the spot for the hole, hope you have long strong finger nails. After you get it fixed just be careful when you install or tighten the 540 shaft, must be turned back and forth a little so gears can slide onto one another and teeth are not hitting on teeth. In this case the pin bent and not the teeth. You shift pto rpm on this tractor with a wrench, not a shift lever.Didnt know thats what you were doing when you tighten those bolts did ya. Hoped this helped, the Guru.

I really don't know that much about this, but i was told that a hole can be drilled and tapped for a 2 inch pipe plug in the transmission case. Then all you have to do is drain the oil remove the plug and fix the pin.
But that hole has to be in the right place.

when you tightened the bolts, you bent the pin inside the tractor, that causes the gear to engage.usually, this requires splitting the tractor, however you may get an answer from someone who knows where to drill a hole in the housing to replace the pin from outside.
