i have recently purchased a 1964 3020 gas with a 46a loader. when you put it in reverse in any range it just wines. the man that used to own it said at first it would pop out of gear and you just had to put it back in. i don't want to spend alot the plan is to trade it in on a skidloader when done. 4089 hours and narrow front any idea what it's worth thanks!!!!! !

first why dont you pull the platform off,and then take the trans cover off.then you may be able to see what the problem is

I strongly urge you to get a manual - it will save a lot of time, even if it's just an I&T book. If you get your parts from your local Deere dealer, they would probably copy pages of their service manual for you, just a thought. I don't have an idea on the value if the rev is working or not, depends on if you want to sell it to somebody to use, or just for salvage. If you do attempt this on your own, without splitting stands you need to be very careful, especially with a narrow-front tractor. Just use some common sense and don't get yourself killed.

The syncronizers are worn out or the reverse shifter is broken. You may possibly get by with a shift lever adjustment but I doubt it . $1000 in parts will fix it.

does this add the shop time? could it be done in your own shop or needs to go to dealer?

The tractor will have to be split to repair this. I would say labor is going to add another $700 to $1000. Having a loader on it will complicate things also. You could get in there and find more problems too, as far as that goes. If you have splitting stands, it's a straightforward procedure. If not, you can improvise, but it's going to make the job more difficult. I would by all means try to adjust the shifter first - you may just get enough more travel to engage the synchronizer and get by for a while. Keep in mind you will also have to removed the seat, rockshaft, etc. to do this.

Have you operated one of these tractors before. There is alot of these tracors out there.Often it is hard to get them in gear. The linkage especially on the out side gets worn and the weight of the shift cam inside carrys the shifter to the wrong spot, will not place it squarely in gear.By lifting up or down on the shift lever you can usually get it in gear, you should be able to find the spot, and it will most like stay there. If this was not a loader trator you would not need to do this so much.Sure there are lots of things inside, but you should Try THIS FIRST.For every worn set synco,s or broken shift lever, theres twenty out there still being used with this problem, they wont fix them if they still move.In time they usually do some damage in side and it will come apart. The person that had this tractor before knew this, and most likely knew how to shift it.YOU should pay close attention this, play with it and make sure you cant get it in gear before you take it apart. If you can get it in gear it most likely can be fixed from the outside.Ask the gentleman that had it before you if he could get in gear.Be glad to help more if you can get it in gear,or if you can't too

The reverse shifter will get worn in these tractors allowing the syronizer clutchs to wear also , the tractor as been used on a loader its probably wore some. This is not uncommon, it will need to be split between cluch housing and tran case, rockshaft housing needs to be taken off to get to trans pump top shaft drives back to remove rear brg cup then you'd better find someone who can press your shaft parts apart and back together, don;t skimp on parts on the top shaft,

You can stick every penny you have inside that chunk of steel, but when you get done if the linkage on the outside doesnt place that shifters over the two sets of drums in the right spot
you will need another job so you can do it over AGAIN.When your done it will do the same thing if that linkage is not tight..... ..... ..... .Two things make it so it cant get it in gear ,one, shift lever over drum wore so bad from no lube that first clutch disk falls down in drum, seen this a few times. Two,the teeth on the gear and drum are raked over so they cant slide onto each other. This happens when the clutch is let out with drum on the edge of the gear. This is caused by worn linkage, very seldom have I found one that wouldnt go in gear after the linkage is repaired, worn clutchs makes it grind gears, the linnings can be in the hyd filter and it will still go in gear..... ...Any way if you stick this money in this trans the linkage needs to be fixed anyway so do that first and see if it works, might save a lot of headaches. If you can get that thing in gear by playing with the shift lever it most likely can be repaired and made to work,if not then start spending your savings. P.S. The weight of that cam and worn linkage, dash drums, and lever and swing lever does strang things inside a trans.Dont forget to keep a eye on those four balls.Pressed one or two of them there gears off them there shafts since 1969,but made a lot more tractors shift right by repairing linkage. When they were new you could yank that shift lever into any gear, they wouldnt grind , just move.
