I need to know how to go about replacing the bearings on the countershaft of a 720 gas. i need to replace bearings number 48, 51, and 53 on pg 45-4 of the parts book. I have looked in the service manual and it looks like a pretty big project. Can you get to these bearing from the First reduction gear cover or do you have to go throught the flywheel side and if so does the flywheel have to come off? Also has anyone know about how much these parts cost? I will sit down and read through the service manual more but thought i would ask to see if there was anything i should beaware of.

Thanks Aaron

Aaron, I just rebuilt the Trany on my 70D. Many of the bearings I was able to get from my NAPA Jobber. My big problem was gaskets. Many of them are no longer avaliable from Deere. I needed the PTO drive and driven gears and shafts. I advertised here on YTMag and had several replies and bought what I needed here. The thrust washer I needed was not avaliable, so I had my local machine shop help me. We finally found something that would work, but it took a couple of weeks looking. Good Luck with the project. Aaron, unfortunately most of the trans will have to come apart to get those countershaft bearings out.. Both sides including the 1st reduction cover & flywheel side cover..You might get by with just sliding the flywheel out on the shaft but as long as it's that close you might as well pull it.. That counter shaft will have to come out the L/H side.. It's a pain to get that center snap ring loose if you have the snap ring style..

~If those counter shaft bearings are bad there is a good chance the counter shaft & inside of the gear will have flat spots worn on them [can you say expensive].. The last time I bought those countershaft bearings I had to do a dealer search to find them so I believe they must be getting scarce. Be very careful pressing that [53] bearing off as that hardened thrust washer under it breaks easily [don't ask me how I know that]..

~I won't try to post the disassembly procedure here... read your manual & post back or E-Mail with any questions [I'm sure you will have some as the manual isn't totally clear on that shaft removal]...
