My newly aquired 53 G has a dragging starter.I have good cables and a 770 cca battery that is hot on it.The G spins slow and even stops.I want to look at it myself. Is there any tricks I should know about while dissasembling it?Would shining up the armature and shining up the part where the brushes touch help it much?I will grease the bushings too.It sat outside for a long time. Thanks fellas.Jack(TN).

When I got my G two years ago, I assumed it was 6 volt (G's are 12 volt) and installed a 6 volt battery instead of a 12 volt. Be sure you didn't make the same mistake.

Try cleaning it up a bit, also might replace brushes if the look worn. You can shine up the armature a bit if it is rusty but use emery clothe not a power brush. Can also touch up the end of the armature where brushes run. Are your battery cables fairly heavy? The heavier the better. Also make sure connections are good. It is possible the field windings could be shorted, open or maybe just leaking some from dirt and rush inside. Does the tractor turn over ok by turning the flywheel? good luck

It has a 12 volt 770 cca battery on it.It will turn good with the plugs out by hand.It has aluminum high compression pistons in it.I really think the starter is dragging. Thanks people and now it's time to go to work.
